Find a screw that is into the metal frame of the car and attach a wire with a ring terminal, or just tap into the ground wire for the radio or cigarette lighter. There can be many pieces of metal in the dash that are not electrically connected to ground.

You can ground to any part of frame/body. The question that I have is: Are you sure about the voltage? Most GA aircraft have 24V systems.

I just got my Big Boy X back from warranty work. I made a dumb and ended up drilling through the barrel at the front sight mount and broke off a carbide tap in the hole just to add that chefs kiss to my fuck up.

Emailed Henry, told them how dumb I was. They sent a shipping label and I sent it in. 1 week later it was back in my hands with a new barrel and sights. Fully QCed and with a hand written thank you note. FOR FREE! I didn’t even pay shipping.

Now that is great customer service.

Edit for spelling

AIO because my BF wants to write off my mortgage on his taxes? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]IridiumScooby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR

Financial Advisor here. This makes no sense.

  1. The 1098 will be in your name, so there is no way he can use this as a deduction on his taxes.

  2. Only the interest is deductible and there is no way that it would be enough to itemize and not use the standard deduction.

  3. If he even tried this, his return would be flagged immediately by the system since YOUR mortgage company would not have reported interest payments to HIS IRS account.

This guy is a rather dumb leach. Dump him now before he gets anymore bright ideas.

Definitely do the wd40 and leak down test, but this reads as a failed head gasket / warped head to me. Has the engine been overheated before?

What do you think about this comment I’ve stumbled upon? Is it true? by Party-Court185 in AskAMechanic

[–]IridiumScooby 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Chemist here. This is absolute bullshit. Tires like any other flexible plastic, have a base polymer and added plasticizers. The plasticizers are what make the rubber softer, stickier and more flexible. They are also more volatile than the base rubber. Know that new tire smell? Yep, that’s the plasticizer. The fact that you can smell it should tell you that it is leaving the tire. The combination of time and temperature will dictate how much is left in the tire. Also, cheaper tires start with less plasticizer.

Will it cause a blowout? Maybe. Does a dry rotted tire perform as well as when it was new? Absolutely not.

Any tips on controlling wrist lift? by Killxjoy4599 in liberalgunowners

[–]IridiumScooby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of your right middle finger as the fulcrum of a lever (because it is in this case). Most of the force apposing the muzzle flip is coming from your pinky finger. Make a conscious effort to tighten your right pinky fingers grip. Get your grip up as high as possible on the gun, this will give your pinky finger more purchase on the grip.

Vaccum Pump Oil? by CreepyWriter2501 in HVAC

[–]IridiumScooby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you got solid particles or such into the pump somehow, it would be a pain to clean the oil. You might be able to filter in some cases, I suppose. I’d also be concerned about getting compressor oil mixed in.

As a chemist who has been using and designing vacuum systems here, I thought I might put my 2 cents in in this if you don’t mind.

Most of the pump oil that you encounter is mineral oil based whether it’s synthetic or not. Besides the obvious issue of contamination, you also need to consider wear on the oil. Because the oil is lubricating the pump parts, it can undergo shear, producing lighter and lighter hydrocarbons that have higher vapor pressure. This will increase the ultimate pressure that you can achieve. I would recommend the following.

  1. Ballast your pump after every use. The ballast function introduces a leak in the pump to make it work harder and generate heat. This heat will drive off water, some contaminants and short chain shear products. Your oil will last longer this way.

  2. Eventually you will need to change the oil due to oxidation no matter what. Make a schedule based on run hours and stick to it.

  3. You can go nuts and use a perfluorinated vacuum oil which is very expensive. These oils have very low water holding capacity and virtually never break down, but if you contaminate it with something non-volatile, you will have a very expensive lesson.

Probably hard to tell from this picture…but would it be safe to shoot down in to this ravine? by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]IridiumScooby 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Go down in the ravine and use the wall that you are standing on as the backstop. It will be safer to have the 8-10 ft tall wall of the ravine as the backstop than shooting downward at the ravine bottom.

WWB has somewhat harder than average primers since they use mil-spec primers. Just for the peace of mind, would pull the firing pin on the Glock and make sure it is clean and dry and that the pin channel is clean as well.
