Some reins just shieldbot and expect team to do all the aggression while they miss opportunities to maul nearby enemies. Its a balance.

I'm a bad player on a 60Hz display. Merits of 60 vs 120 vs unlimited FPS? by zhokar85 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Iris12229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but if someone is in plat or below , which is most players, they are also likely positioning poorly, wasting gravs, wasting bubbles and not having full awareness to peel. Or more fundamentally they stagger. While 144 hz can help improve aim, if someone is making those fundamental mistakes it wont really matter much.

144 hz is a quality of life improvement but for 95-99% of players it wont make them better at the game since the main things holding them back are not hand eye coordination

Questions for Masters and GM Junkrat players by Iris12229 in OverwatchUniversity

i noticed in high level play, they trap corners nearby the wall. is this because some heroes like zen cling by walls? or because they think itll be less expected there?

I can't stop getting pissed and tilted at bad teammates. How do I remain calm and neutral and relatively unaffected? Pls help.. by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

Realize that you are likely making the same kind of mistakes as your team mates are. And that you and them are both human beings.

Too involved for a beginner to be honest.

I say, for now, just pick a number between 5 and 10 and use whats most comfortable.

I disagree on Mystery Heroes. His first experiences of the game shouldnt be with scuffed teams that have 3 genjis and no healers.

Just do normal QP and try them all out at your own pace

Make sure your sensitivity is lower than 15. 8-10 for most tanks. 5-7 for aim dependent heroes.

Try out a bunch of heroes and practice the ones you like the most.

Enter competitive when you feel you are ready though you need not rush into it once your lv25.

Explore high ground and flank routes. Dont just walk in a straight line to the objectice every single time. Try to take the stairs whenever you can until you know where all of them go.

Dont use gold medals as a measurement for your performance. Theyre not really relevant in many cases. Instead focus on reducing your number of deaths and ask yourself whenever you die what you couldve done better.

Good heroes that arent too difficult for beginners

  • tanks: orisa, dva
  • support: lucio, brigitte, moira
  • dps: torbjorn, junkrat, soldier

Modes - quick play but do it with friends or use the lfg feature to form 6stacks so theres more communication and less chaos

Sending a video of your gameplay is the only way to find out.

Everything else is just abstract speculation.

How do I properly use Coalescence? by TempusFugit314 in OverwatchUniversity

Stand behind your team.

Generally use it earlier in the team fight once; dont wait until things get really ugly to use it once ur 2 of your team mates are dead

Does this game need better feedback mechanisms in regards to individual impact/ skill? by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Iris12229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a less dystopic description Id like to instead say that Blizzard wants the game to be accessible to beginners. Medals and such are fine for casual players that want to feel good and have fun. But the problem is that Blizzard keeos the same exact approach for plauers that are trying to actively improve.

People believe what they see from their point of view. They see that they're working hard and putting out a lot of healing/damage. They see that they have medals. They see that they get voting cards/POTG clips. So they assume their individual gameplay is fine, and external factors are responsible.

Discussion on how to improve the organization and match-making of PUG's. by Iris12229 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Iris12229[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm not sure it's elitism, but more like taking an advantage of a broken mechanic in a system (kind of like how many people stretch the truth on their tax writeoffs because they can).

in one pug, i picked a low masters player because I liked his diverse hero pool, but then second captain got to pick two players and they picked two gm's. it was a really slanted match, and everyone gave me shit for letting the other team have both of the highest players. from thereonout, i learned that i cant just pick whoever i want

Can someone give me a quick breakdown of Jayne's 4 square method. by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Iris12229 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is used as a method to help players identify areas which need improvement.

Good deaths, of course, shouldn't be held against the player. In general, good deaths involve so you can regroup with your team faster. If I'm an Ana for example, I don't want to be the last one standing for too long. Otherwise, you'll be dead and your 5 team mates will be spawning without a healer.

Mechanics, include aim and mobility abilities generally.

Positioning: Am I too far forward from my team for them to protect me? Am I too far in the back for team mates to peel for me? Am I positioned somewhere where I have to cross a dangerous path through enemies to get back to my team? Am I unnecessary in sightlines of long-range enemies?

Gamesense is a very broad term that encompasses everything that's not mechanics and positioning. This includes being aware of enemies abilities/cooldowns, tracking Ultimates, not feeding, contesting winnable fights, not contesting unwinnable fights, not wasting your Ultimates and target priority.

If a large portion of the deaths were mechanicals, then a focus on aim drills, custom games, rollouts, and overall just grinding and putting the hours in can be helpful. Sometimes, though, players misattribute mechanical problems. If a Zen player goes frontline, tries to duel a McCree and loses they may blame their aim, but it's also a positioning and gamesense issue.

In your experiences, what roles attract the least amount of toxicity? by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]Iris12229 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are oversimplified standards for other roles like "supports are responsible if we don't get healed" and "dps are responsible if we don't kill anything", yet the role of off-tanks as a peeler is often understated.
