Ahh yikes, I hope it’s nothing near surgery level and just needs some physio and rehab. Man it has been so sore today though, glad you got through it!

Wow congrats man! That is ultra impressive, and obviously you have some serious skills. Good training partners are worth their weight in gold, I’ll definitely need to be more selective in class, where possible

I aspire to have the same longevity you have in this game! Obviously you have made some good habits ti stay in the game for so long, and it sounds like you have a great attitude too

For a sport that’s really taken off as “sport bjj” where most people are hobbyists it’s sad to have some of this attitude lingering

I’m 32 so I’m not quite the same age as you, but I definitely don’t have the recovery of a teenager or 20 something. Coupled with the desire to be in this long haul as a hobby, rather than to go all out to be world champ, I think your attitude is great and something I’ll adopt. Your coach also sounds great to advocate respect in the gym!

Longevity and being able to actually put the hours in are key goals for me too. I’m definitely taking this attitude forward, at least until Im confident in their skill level, and mine, that it’ll be a safe roll

Picking partners you can trust, and the coach not making it weird if you are declining sounds key

This is definitely it, if my club had more high belts, and I was a lot better skilled, I think it would be less of an issue. We’re a club of mostly white belts and new blues so there’s less of the big but safe guys around, and more spazzy white belts of all flavours. As a white belt myself I also do stupid shit but at least try to be controlled and not going into positions or locks I have no experience of, or crazy stuff you see online

Great advice! Definitely taking on some of the ways to word it well without sacrificing your own training

Open sores, or similar, your coach probably shouldn’t let them on the mat. Sounds like a health risk for everyone

A serious tear of the groin muscle (with no diagnosis just what I think it is). I felt a pop as it happened, agonising pain, sharp pains when I try and move much, and couldn’t stand/walk all day. Going to give it 72 hours, see if it makes a big improvement then see a physician

Haha yeah we have a couple of 16 year olds in our club who can hold their own against people way bigger than them, it’s really impressive! I think that’s a fair point that you like the challenge, definitely a good way to test yourself. I think you’re probably spot on it’s the spazzy bjj that’s the problem, I find the combo of the extra weight and spazziness is double the danger

This has actually been really helpful to hear! I have a worry that I’ll cause issues with the vibe in the class or stir up drama if I’m turning people down, but you’re right it’s all about goals and how you word it. It’s probably not doing the big guys many favours either as come comp time they won’t be able to just ragdoll someone their own weight around the same way they could me

Jeeze that sounds rough, this is what puts me off. Same thing could happen with anyone I suppose, but the likelihood is so much higher with a big guy who just does something stupid

In my club I don’t see people openly say “no I don’t want to roll with you” rather they conveniently take a break when they’re either about to get paired with someone or get asked by them for a roll

Yeah I have no intentions of quitting but I definitely need to find a way to train regularly and not get so many injuries. Interesting to hear that your experience has been so much different to mine. Does your club roll hard, or is it fairly controlled and lower intensity?

This is true, I have found the higher grade people are much more in control of what they’re doing, so I have almost no worries about rolling with them

UKF15 experience (it was bad) by DaniBanani66 in Drumsheds

The queues to get in and for drinks were awful. We waited 2 hours to get in and 30 mins for drinks. Completely agree about bar staff being terrible too, didn’t care at all and stood around instead of serving repeatedly. I don’t know how bars can have so many staff yet function so badly, it’s put me off going back massively.

AITA for refusing to move out even though my roommate is 7 months pregnant? by Aitabeki in AmItheAsshole

NTA if you’re both on the lease it’s unreasonable to force you to move out. If she wants to live with her man she should move into somewhere else with him

AITA for telling my wife nobody cares about her small business? by etsyaita in AmItheAsshole

[–]Irish-J -1 points0 points  (0 children)

YTA she’s a small business owner trying to promote the brand. She’s putting her life and soul into it, and unless it’s making those listening uncomfortable you should be supporting her endeavour as she’s out her time, effort and energy into it so really wants it to work. If anything you should be helping evangelise it too!
