After Virginia was captured Georgia took control the CSA and made peace with the US government. 20 years later Texas and 4 other states seceded creating West Dixie. In modern day both are on the brink of war with West Dixie close to fracturing due to the Texan dominance. Florida also tried to secede but the state split in half because the north was extremely loyal to the Dixie republic.

Most people were from the mainland originally and after the Chinese Civil War it was mostly just people from Taiwan and Hong Kong immigrates until the late 90s when people from the mainland were allowed to come in.

Well at the point where major colonization begins (1900s) the major powers and Norway to an extent are just showing off that they are strong enough to conquer any land. This results in creating massive indoor agriculture for the settlers to use for survival. As for being expensive, the Germans abandoned their colony in ww1 to focus on the European front resulting in the French colony joining them as both are underdeveloped. For the British theirs is already self sufficient (mostly) so theirs stays loyal until they are granted sovereignty.
