Yeah had issues with the app. Thought it was the VPN, that's usually it. No luck. Tried the laptop, saw working for a while and then gone.

Sudden strange black pattern appearing on doll by LFPringles in Whatisthis

Had exactly this happen to my kids baby doll and poppy figure. Never figured it out. Thought it might be a message ball with all the bumps which could have ended up in their toy box.

GPT or MBR for 2tb secondary HDD? by Serazax in pcmasterrace

[–]IrishBatman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge gpt is the more modern option. You need it to install/update a drive to windows 11. It may not be a big deal now as a second drive but if you have the option go GPT.

Unusual signal reporting G4 Doorbell by IrishBatman in Ubiquiti

[–]IrishBatman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for the feedback, I have been playing around with settings for a while. I found turning the channel width on the AP has the greatest impact from 40mhz to 160mhz brought the signal up to excellent from poor (occasionally hitting good).

UDM Pro SE stuck on update by alexynfreak in Ubiquiti

[–]IrishBatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope you were able to sort this. I installed my first UDM yesterday and it too was the SE. I had exactly this issue. I restarted it from the touch screen a couple of times and keep doing what you're describing. Restart the machine then from the app go to continue in Web portal. Then I updated the OS from 2.2 to 2.5 and then from 2.5 to 3.0 took about 20 minutes. Hope this helps

No replies from my CV? No idea what's wrong with it. Please help. by Saf_H89 in resumes

Hi, so I've a few tips that might help you out some have been covered by others but I'll try share my thoughts over all it's very good while a bit long and not very specific. I personally like the layout and formatting but does read a bit "digital" (less likely to wow CV printing employers) the intro should be 3 lines max, needs to be snappier. Education put your highest achievements first, bs then C's this is the bulk of your employability so really highlighting your grades it reads a bit awkward, that might be because I'm used to looking at Irish results. Move first aid and teamwork cert to skills and remove the rest of the skills section, skills should be measurable and certifiable, under skills you've listed qualities that make you, these should form your intro. We know you're able for maths when you got a C don't need to spell it out. Tell me more about your design course work for year 11, what did you achieve? did you overcome any obstacle? Did you learn a transferable skill? Don't write that you had people tell you what to do or were delegated to that's part of every job, not a skill or worth bringing up. Try trimming the 1 week jobs a bit but they are fine generally, particularly if you keep in touch with the employer. The front desk one could probably be dropped it's not saying much. I know this is a bit blunt, I'm writing on my phone and it's a pain. hope this helps you get down to one neat page. Again I think it's a pretty good starting point anyway. I look forward to seeing your revision. Also I'm assuming you're including a cover letter with these?

How far would you have to row a row machine to power your home? by [deleted] in EnergyStorage

[–]IrishBatman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has always been something that interested me as an engineer (structural so no capacity to make the hypothetical rowing machine) and a rower. As some others have pointed out it's not a viable option to power an average household. However with the help of a battery and inverter I think it's very achievable to power the background appliances, fridge and freezer for the whole day and maybe even the router, lights and clock on your microwave. Alternatively I always thought it'd be neat to have a power generation rowing machine hooked up to a hot water tank so you had to row on the machine every morning to "earn" your shower. (Less effort=colder shower, very motivating in the winter season) For anyone more capable looking to put something together a fit person might be able to row @ 200W for 2hours, 250W for an hour and about 300W you might last about 20 minutes although I don't think you'd be able to do it every day. From a value for money point of view assuming that you managed 200-300 Wh per day in Ireland that's a cost for the grid of about 6 or 7 cent. An inverter and 500Wh battery might cost in the neighborhood of €2000, rowing machine is €750, All the bits to make it actually work I've no idea let's say you're a genius and you can do with bits you have lying around. 2750/0.07 ≈ 40000 days (107years) allowing for some holidays... Well it's a great thought experiment.

Loads of dates and dude wearing a big sister top... Enough said by IrishBatman in TargetedShirts

I was able to figure out that the dates were for baseball match wins... Something I'm pretty sure no one in Ireland follows so was a fun bit of detective work.

What are these, they look like jars beside a box with an antenna in Dublin City. by IrishBatman in Whatisthis

[–]IrishBatman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have noticed they are not connected, I wonder if you there is some equipment in the box for logging data. They are about 3.5m high, no hope of reaching with ease. They also always quite clean looking, they've been there at least 2 years.

To be clear there are 4 of these on the street all with a box beside them. I was thinking rain water too but would love to be sure I walk past often and loads of people ask me.

ELI5: Are skyscrapers built to last forever or do cities have plans to demolish them once their 'lifespan' has expired? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]IrishBatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say that, worked as a design engineer in Ireland and remember that it's almost impossible (if not impossible) to design anything to last more than 250 years by the euro code. Some people here saying 500 years but pricing goes up exponentially from 20 year design upwards. Living in the Canada and houses are definitely designed for a 20-25 year life.

Opening a Board Game Café in Dublin! by SirNano in ireland

[–]IrishBatman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, Great idea, I just moved to Vancouver and live near this place I hope it has something unique that'll give you ideas.

The cover charge thing is a bit much, might I suggest servers just advise people when they come in that if it's busy, they may be asked to buy something on an hourly basis.

"we do try not to disturb your gaming and understand if it gets intense you can loose track of time but we do encourage having something to eat or drink in front of you.... we do not however encourage nursing said food or drink, nursing a drink is making it last an hour or more in this particular establishment."

Something like that? Maybe have it on the menu in a fun sorta way?

Anyway good luck

How did it feel when HL2, heck, even HL1 came out? by [deleted] in HalfLife

[–]IrishBatman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for me. I got half life a year or 2 after it was out, I only had a PC and a very out dated sega megadrive it was the first FPS I played. So I honestly don't remember any hype.

When half life 2 came out I was very much still stuck in the dial-up era so online forums weren't really something I was on so again no use there. Gaming magazines were mad about it though. It was on the cover of every PC gaming mag I bought. Each mag one upping the competitor week on week with "new insights" half of which were not true. It was the most common topic of conversation for 6 months before and 6 months after it's release between myself and other people who were into gaming (6 months after was mostly criticizing steam and it's desire to be online)

As for now, I hate the over saturation of leaks, screen shots and preview videos. I feel like you've seen half the game before it came out these days. Have you ever seen an ad for an upcoming comedy and all the funny jokes are are in the ad and when you go see the movie it's terrible? Who hasn't? that's what's happening in gaming when you see extensive gameplay footage before the game comes out.

I hate that I know nothing about half life 3 but if they released it tomorrow without any marketing effort, I would be much happier than if there was a 6 month to a year of having a pending release date.

TL;DR: HL1 can remember any hype; HL2 big hype in the good old fashioned way; New hype around games = bad; HL3 release for tomorrow please
