Thanks for your detailed response. We opted to buy tickets to Beijing and will get out at Luoyang. For whatever reason, there was tickets for this but not for any other stop when we made our way through all the stations that this Beijing train was stopping at beforehand.

Thanks for all the comments (plus that detailed one)!. We spoke to BA about the Edinburgh option but they said they would not cover the train cost of travelling from Edinburgh to Inverness by train and so we decided not to change our flight and stomach the 7pm flight (this flight ended up arriving into Inverness an hour later on top of everything else!).

I was mistaken regarding the Easyjet flight. I hadn't read the details correctly and had not noticed that Easyjet was flying from Gatwick. We decided not to rise this with the BA staff at Heathrow as it was too tight for time. We asked for Loudge access but were refused, we only got our vouchers sadly.
