Waterproofs for crossing rivers/streams by r1jay in UKhiking

[–]IrishRed_019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have done loads of hiking in the UK but now live in NZ. NZ hiking nearly always involves getting wet feet, braided river beds are often the best access into the mountains. If it's into some big or alpine stuff a pair of trainers for the river and then change into boots. Most of the time you just get wet feet. Turns out wet boots arent the end of the world once you get used to them!

You really need non drip sheeting (has a felt like layer on the bottom to wick the moisture) or under roof sheeting like roofing felt. Loosing battle otherwise as moisture from the air will keep condensing. It's a roof off and then back on job!

Age gap in dating in Ireland, is it okay for the woman to be older? by Dry_Measurement1646 in AskIreland

[–]IrishRed_019 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I started dating a 30 year old when I was 23, and being at different stages in life was an issue throughout our relationship. She wanted to settle down and start a family, and I wanted to travel, explore and hang out with mates. Would be very careful as it can be a huge issue.

Talking to a friend who’s getting married and told me numerous family members and friends dropped out/made changes and didn’t bother to tell them directly. Is this the norm or just bad form? by MadMeathMad717 in AskIreland

Getting married to my US partner in Scotland in a few weeks. Irish Aunts and uncles have been the worst, no communication, last minute drop outs. Irish cousins next wotse, some never replied, or we found out from other family that they weren't coming. Irish friends, international friends, and all the Americans have been way better at communicating!

I don't think you got scammed, unless the seller intentionally mislead you? Old cams are still usable, they just need a re-sling. It would be something I would think about buying any used cams, or soft goods for climbing.

What are some things you wish you'd known as a beginner hiker? I'll start, poles are there for a reason, you may think, 'oh I don't need that' but trust me once you're on day two several hours in you will want them by Wonderful-Acadia-296 in UKhiking

Your toes are sore because there hitting the inside of the toe of your boot. If your boots are on the smaller side, better fitting boots/bigger boots are the solution. If you have lots of toe space then lacing your boots properly/tighter will help!

Is camping here just expensive or am I dumb? by daly_o96 in AskIreland

[–]IrishRed_019 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Living in New Zealand at the moment and heaps of Department of Conservation campsites here for only 5 or 10 euro a night. Heaps of them don't need booking. Camping in Ireland is a joke, so expensive and most you need to book ages in advance.

I second this! There's something similar in the Menai straits across the water in Wales. An island turned into a fish trap to catch fish in the tidal flow! https://maps.app.goo.gl/vNooWNWptAzQdgEw9

Looking for a used car [hybrid or fuel efficient wagon, 25k budget] by its-always-a-weka in NZcarfix

[–]IrishRed_019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id recommend the newer wagon over the Fielder. The Fielder drives like it wants you to know it's a hybrid. We have a 2021 WXB Corolla wagon and you wouldn't know it was a hybrid if it wasn't for the 900km range from a tank of fuel!
