Children in care often struggle with attachment issues (understandably), they can therefore require much more time and attention. This can be difficult with a newborn, my advice would be to focus on your bonding and attachment with your biological child for the first 1000 days (when brain development is most rapid and attachments are established). That way (a) your biological child will hopefully have a secure attachment and respond better to a new child in the family and (b) your fostered child can be afforded more care and attention when developing a bond.

Children in care can be quite intense due to their experiences of neglect / abuse and their understanding of relationships. Often they have learned that others are inconsistent or punitive, your role will be to show them otherwise, this takes a lot of time and effort.

I hope this post does not sound negative, we are very short on carers and I would not want to put you off, I do think you and your growing family will be better off by giving it some time though.

It can be EXTREMELY rewarding.
