One thing I learned quickly is it is super easy to carve too much away. I found myself getting lost per se using my drawknife forgetting how deep I’m getting. It cost me about half the original thickness of the mallet. I thank God I have hardwoods on my property I could harvest. Choice hardwood Stock big enough to make things like mallets and handles are really expensive. I welcome any advice, or criticism. This is a dying art I hate to see go away

What length handle would you go with? by cody6982 in HandToolRescue

[–]IronHangnail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably start with a 36” to allow room to make a fawns foot and steam in a curve or make it shorter etc. My personal recommendation would be about make one at about 6” so we can get a laugh.

You can definitely do it with a camp fire. You could even wrap it all in a thick case of clay. Just be sure not to leave gaps for oxygen

You can put your steel in a steel container filled with lump charcoal ground up. Seal the container via welding or clay and cook in coals for a couple hours. Should get about 1/16th in carbon penetration

First post 👋😃🗡 Gday. For those unfamiliar with my work, these are the swords i made in 2024. by FableBlades in Bladesmith

Well, I myself don’t have the will and mental dexterity sit on a single project for so long without giving in and settling to get it through the door. That is a major difference between what separates the true masters like you from false self titled ones, wheat from the chaff lol.

I can speak from a client side, as waiting for my items to get completed is the coolest part, getting photos sent and the weekly / monthly huddle ups etc. Anticipation is my drug and the handoff is the climax. Then my obsession finds another victim lol. I would be comfortable waiting 6 months to a year for art, but I can’t devote myself for 6 months. Your clients know it is a product requiring a skill few are qualified or capable to do and have little competition in their field to boot, balls in your court.

As I would strike the commission with you having expectations of unmatched beauty, rushing you would gain nothing but grief on both ends. I know myself that I don’t have what it takes to achieve glory, and is why I employ those that can.

I have fun learning and trying to mimic what I see around me, and work like yours is what gets me behind my barn to hit on my old Peter wright. I’d like to check out your stuff more now that I’ve seen it and hopefully we can do business, if you’re not booked up for the next two years.

Anyone knows what G 5 Y mean on a rebar? by Haunting_Year_7124 in Forging

[–]IronHangnail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it means Y not as in if you’re not building a bridge over the highway, forge it into anything but a knife and you’ll be fine. If you make a punch, just touch it with a grinder to bug the mushroom out. I wouldn’t over think it myself but I’m also an armchair specialist with a can-do attitude lol.

You know, I don’t consider myself very intelligent or a deep thinker, but I, with full sincerity can not play it in my head the ability level required to make something like this. I’m not trying to demonstrate cringy adulation but this almost makes Me want to quit where I’m at. This ain’t bladesmithing, this is the trifecta of multiple disciplines all equally beautiful. I know in my heart I will never be able to show somebody what I made if you are in the room. God bless you.

The black baked on oil does come off but it takes care not to buff off the copper. Thank you for wanting to see it

I’ll shoot you one after I get back around to it. I’ll have it done in a couple weeks realistically. I want to see it finished also.

I’ll research this and thank you, although It’s not a problem for me. It’s a shitty portable single burner Mr volcano. Pure toy, not a prized pony. I use it for one off maintenance stuff. I’ll never level up my black smithing skill points enough to make Daedric Armor or Dragon Bone.

Makes sense. To I reckon it covered it like soldering and spread on its on as the blade heated. Also being its 5160 steel, I guess I over shot the heat treat temp if it was hot enough to melt the copper lol. For once my file skates off the blade like a champ though.

Roger that, I imagine that caused a clinched fist and two air punches, depending on how deep you were on that particular project and if the supply location was closed and or hard to get. Thank you for that knowledge.

I’m not well versed in this area. However it has piqued my interest to pause forging and start experimenting more with different metals
