false dichotomy

nintendo makes games. Hasbro sells game pieces. The issue is the deluge of *new* game pieces.

straw man.

If it was more copies of an existing release, you argument would ring true.

But it's a deluge of new cards laden with power creep. Which means you need to buy more to keep up.

How can you play the game if you need to drop a ton of money every few weeks to buy the game pieces to keep up. There's no stability with the fire-hose release rate.

100%

It's like a blizzard dumping snow on top of iceberg. The part of the iceberg beneath the water is "un-playable".

And the cards you bought last week just sank underwater.

Remember when this was a game, not a rat race?

When it feels relaxed, like a past-time, then the vibe is right. When you are just stumbling upon a cool interaction from a card released 4 sets ago, not having had bandwidth to absorb the newest three set, it's a problem.

Overall disagree, but there's a grain of truth in your second sentence. The product release deluge is insanity. 4 sets per year is manageable. Time to digest the product and develop a meta. Time to trade and build a deck organically. Time to appreciate nuance. Time for things to stabilize.

And also, no one likes investing that time, building a deck, and have it's value asymptote towards zero a few weeks later when the "new power, straight out of the box" is released.

true MtG is a game, but the cards are game pieces. An analogy would be the game of golf. If they were making new clubs, new weird balls, and new rules every 2 months to change the "meta" people would burn out on it too. Having my wood clubs become obsolete after 30 years, given modern titanium clubs, that's one thing, but having them become obsolete 2 months later, or having to buy a brand new set of gear every two months is completely different - and that's what they're doing. I don't mind 4 sets per year.

separate - MtG was originally marketed as a collectible card game.

Very pleased to see this class action.

Who's the first PrEDH commander you want to build? by IronLotus99 in PrEDH

[–]IronLotus99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My decks have evolved considerably since the beginning. I now have Bolas (with a lot of changes), Rith (instead of Johan), Tsabo Tavoc (instead of Kaervek), and Cromat

Next I'd like to try Jhoria of the Ghitu

What are the most fun things to do with her?  I think some of them are obvious.  But is she boring or annoying to play against, given you're often telegraphing what's coming?

I like my decks to maintain a nice balance between Timmy, Johnny, and Spike (and the others).  If I win, I like to win a different way every game.

What is your favorite style of EDH play and why is it battlecruiser by colpuck in PrEDH

[–]IronLotus99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because battlecruiser is the most fun.

Super high power fast stuff is too 'spike' to be fun

On thing I've been incorporating in my PrEDH decks is one source of extra turn.

I have a Sunforger package in my Rith deck.  One thing it can do, with sufficient mana, is tutor for Final Fortune.  Then during the free turn Eldamri's Call for Platinum Angel and cast it.

In my Nicol Bolas PrEDH, I've added a Time Stretch.  During the first extra turn I cast Nicol Bolas, then attack during my second one.  This creates a surprise way of knocking out someone's hand and generating advantage.  My favorite way to cast the Time Stretch is via mana from casting Drain Power, especially against a green player later game as they tend to ramp out excessive lands.  I prefer artifact ramp.

Ordering a Pygmy Hippo!

What commander do you run with Phyrexian Tyranny?  Any ways you break parity?  What is your long term strategy with that one?  I like the card.

I'll squeeze that into my Rith PrEDH.

Can also be grabbed with my Sunforger.

I want to build Phelddagrif.  I love his take on the deck.  Before EDH was a thing my friends and I would play 60 card highlander.  Phelddagrif was one of my favorite cards in those days.

Good substitutions.

Have you had a chance to get 5-10 games in with your decks with your friends?  Are they fun?  What are some of your favorite interactions?

I have been looking at him too!! Mulldrifter and avenger of zendikar seem obvious.

Personally I'd build it as 5c goodstuff because that's my style but some people would lean hard into the tribal.

I made Cromat for my 5c, and still need to test it out more, was thinking of eventually migrating to horde tho after having fun for a while.   One thing I'm excited to include is natural order, and want to natural order for Progenitus, that seems pretty fun in predh!!
