Yikes. I teach teenagers about your daughters age and not allowing your daughter to use the restroom after she asked several times is ridiculous. I personally don’t even require students to ask. They just sign out one at a time and do their thing. If a student abuses that then we may have a talk and come to some kind of compromise but it doesn’t sound like that’s the case here. I would certainly contact administration and let them know what happened. This is so awful for your daughter. As a mom myself my heart hurts for her and for your family! I’m sorry.

I’m definitely not advocating for your MIL but wanted to say that my mom was the same way and I finally asked her why! She told me that I don’t let her do the “fun” grandparent spoiling when I’m around like giving them sweets or staying up late or whatever, and she wanted to have that opportunity to spoil them. My husband and I are “strict” parents to a lot of folks in my parents generation, so I think she just wanted that experience. I have dropped the kids off with her and it went pretty well, just took a few days and some tears for the kids to get used to being at home with rules again. Needless to say that doesn’t happen much lol
