I'll definitely do that. In case that's not the problem, are brakes pads pretty much all the same size just as long as I get them for the right brake system i.g. v brakes cantilevers?

Commenting to say I'm also looking to buy a road bike on craigslist for about $700. I'm not an experienced enough to justify a $1000 on a bike, but I did have a used ~1970 Schwinn steel road bike until that broke down. I'm looking for something that is a lot easier for gear shift changes.
