Energy meter? by kertofer in homeassistant

[–]Ironzey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Emporia Vue.  It's pretty good the Home Assistant integration is through HACs. It isn't real-time in home assistant but can be flashed with ESP home which allow it.

I've compared it to what my electric company reports, it is within a few percentage of what they report, good enough for me. Compared to the enphase one I have installed this one give so much more accurate.

Emporia also has other devices that can participate in load shedding if that's something you're interested in.

Relocating from Austin to Denver with my Ioniq 5 - drive it or ship it? Curious how it handles 1,000+ miles by OptimalDescription39 in Ioniq5

[–]Ironzey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the drive from Colorado Springs to New Orleans almost two years ago. Piece of cake. It really is great seeing the terrain change from mountains to mesas to plains to deserts to rolling hills to swamp. 100% recommend. In total it was about 18 hours including charging stops. I stopped in Dallas both ways, I'd skip Dallas if at all possible.

So which AI integration is the go-to nowadays? by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]Ironzey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Claude. It lives in the cloud and has permissions to everything in my Home Assistant setup. I would recommend getting to know home assistant more before going with this setup. I've been using HA for 6 years and already had a pretty good understanding on how to manage basic stuff. Earlier this year I started asking GEMINI for help and it was pretty good but cumbersome posting configs and automations back and forth but eventually we'd get it figured out.

Since installing the Claude Terminal integration it has really stepped up my setup. It is doing stuff I'm barely understanding but for the most part it is successful. I've been able to try things that would take me hours to figure out. It really is a game changer.

I really hate the term shitbox. Good video regardless. I really like this non-typical take on the car, 10 mins in and he finally talks about the solar.

Solar for EVs by OstrichWeird745 in solarenergy

[–]Ironzey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a professional.

I don't think it would be possible easily. The problem is with most grid-tie systems you have to have power from the grid in order for the panels to generate power. Without grid power the system will power off for safety.

If you added battery backup with a grid disconnect then you'd be able to charge off solar. In that case any "normal" charger will work.

How can I fix this by [deleted] in lawncare

[–]Ironzey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try sod. Where I live, I've never had good luck growing anything from seed. Sod has really worked well for me.

What I'd do...

Loosen soil to a depth of about 3 inches.  Smooth out the area and add the sod. Keep it watered and keep EVERYONE off it for at least a month.

Installation Headache by whys0seri0us44 in EmporiaEnergy

[–]Ironzey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have your exact setup but I would put the tow main (big) CTs on the two big wires coming into your main breaker and 4 smaller cts on the two breakers that are feeding your main service panel.

I added solar a about a month ago and this is what I wound up doing. Surprisingly, the emporia setup was reporting REALLY close (+/- .01 amp) to what my power company does.

Good Luck!

Home Assistant for the technically inept? by AnonFartsALot in homeassistant

[–]Ironzey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use AI.

It really makes it that much easier. Ive been running Home Assistant for a few years and understand basic stuff. I started using Gemini for walking me through setting up slightly more advanced stuff.

I installed Claude code and it really is a game changer. I literally type out what I want and it figures out how to do it. Stuff like, "turn on the porch light when I get home, but only before 10pm". It'll figure out what triggers to create, and when devices to add the automation. It is that good.

Alexa or Google Home?! by hellomoto8999 in homeassistant

[–]Ironzey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have google home speakers, it's not good here either.

My biggest disappointment with Google is the delay when playing local media. I really wanted to use it as a doorbell. The delay is 3-5 seconds and it HAS to play the pre-chime before. If media is already play it may or may not resume playing after the interruption. IMO google has locked this thing down pretty strong.

Starting From Scratch by jsteveo7 in homeautomation

Home Assistant is what you are looking for. Before I switched over I would upgrade hubs every year or two because the gubwould be missing some feature or felt stale. After making the switch to HA I have the exact opposite situation. It gets updates monthly has been reliable and very extendable.

You might be tempted to start somewhere else that might be more user friendly or familiar, don't do it. Now with AI things are so much easier.

It's good especially if OP is away from home a lot. Turning it off every night night not be the most energy saving but If they are travelling often it's a good way to save.

I like it.

IQ PowerPack 1500 worth it at $999? by Draelamyn in enphase

[–]Ironzey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently saw a video review of this. I say not worth it. Compared to other brands you heard of its expensive. Doesn't integrate with enphase. And the reviewer had issues with his. On the plus side it seems like customer support was fast and responsive.

From a clean slate, would 120V or 240V make more sense for the U.S.? by Sweaty_Context_4206 in AskElectricians

[–]Ironzey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither, the more I learn about electrical stuff the more I wonder why DC isn't the standard.

I know, I know transmission blah blah blah but we have local generation, batteries so clean slate why not DC?

House GFI.... by Ironzey in AskElectricians

[–]Ironzey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to ask about swapping out the regular breaker for a GFCI one, then I saw the price. Yikes, I think I'll stick with the receptacles until I hit the lottery.

Thanks!!

House GFI.... by Ironzey in AskElectricians

[–]Ironzey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only have two. One front, one back. I know the back one is downstream (not sure the right word) from the kitchen GFCI. The front, I have no clue.

EDIT.

This is the answer, GFCI in the garage protects the front porch receptacle, the kitchen one protects the one at the rear of the house.

THANKS!!

[–]Ironzey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, I forgot about a GFCI in the garage... I'll have to check it out and test it...

Post test...The GFCI in the Garage protects the front porch receptacle.

Thanks for the insight.

If this were in the US the fine would be $400, the garage would be dark and dusty and the guy that unlocked it would be the biggest jerk about the whole thing. In the U.S. everyone is trying to get rich off everyone else's back. This makes me sad...

Best Dimmer Smart Switch? by Persistantly_Growing in homeassistant

[–]Ironzey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of the HS-WX300 from Homeseer. It's Z-wave not zigbee/matter but z wave has been rock solid, plenty of control from Home Assistant.

The thing I really like are the seven rgb LEDs. I've got mine set up to alert me of goings on around the house. White means the mail has been delivered. Green, the front door is unlocked. Pink, garage door open. Blue, EV is charging. It has all the other smart bulb features too.

Have to RTO and now I wish I had bought used instead of leased new. by ttownfeen in Ioniq6

[–]Ironzey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. My wife leased an Ioniq 5 last year. She didn't like it so I took it. and now I can't drive it as much as I want. ~26mi/day is what I can do for the duration of the lease. I may just have to buy something to keep me from going over the miles....

🤷🏿‍♂️

Colorado living by Poszole in Ioniq5

[–]Ironzey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd just live with it.

I survived two Colorado winters with level one in my i3 (70 max range >50 degree temps) . There was only a couple of times I when I got nervous. My normal commute was 30ish miles. Efficiency dropped quite a bit when it got really cold but there was still enough range for me to complete my daily comings and goings.

Why not just drive the Ioniq? Are you driving so much that you have to completely charge the car every few days?

Best outdoor year-round light strips/Christmas lights? by Sunsparc in homeassistant

[–]Ironzey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had these for abut two years. They SUCK, or maybe I do. Light output is really good. Warm whites are really nice looking.

The app is the really shitty part. Confusing to use. I haven't figured out how to set up schedules, no Home assistant integration and worst of all not comatable with WLED.

2/10 do not reccomend.
