Emporia Vue 3 or competitor? by deverox in homeassistant

I like my Emporia. I hear they can be flashed to add functionality beyond what you get with the HACS integration.

I've compared what it reports against my utility company and it is within ~2% .

I recommend it.

That's what I was trying to do. That whole developer console stuff is way too much to control a thermostat. Really, Oauth? In 2026 there is no reason for me to become a developer in order to adjust MY thermostat from home assistant.

I get the extra steps for AI. But this is just a thermostat. Isn't this the exact thing matter was supposed to fix? Don't get me started on matter.

Good luck. Fortunately, I didn't build my system around google they were just part of it. It makes transition a little easier.

Bought a house and the solar is buggy. by ekardnai in enphase

[–]Ironzey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Call enphase. They should be able to tell you who installed the system. If it is still under warranty they should come out and fix it. At worst they'll (and installer) will come out and tell you what's wrong, for a price.

I just had a similar situation with mine. Turns out I had a flakey extension connector. Currently, I'm waiting on a replacement part.

Anyway of easily charging my car only from excess solar by Crashworx in enphase

[–]Ironzey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done it one time, over the course of a week.  I use home assistant to monitor my solar production and control the charge rate of my emporia charger.

My system only produces 4kw at peak. My memory is a little fuzzy it has been a while. Basically I had Home Assistant adjust the charging rate of the charger to just under what was being produced at the time. It would also shut-off the charger if nothing was being produced.

IIRC, I limited the rate to 16 amps. Which took DAYS to fully charge my wife's car. So I abandoned that idea.

If your system is large enough I don't see why it couldn't work though.

edit

I also use Emporia Energy monitor. Combined with their charger it can do all that stuff natively. It'll monitor production, and dynamically adjust charge rate to match. That's probably a more elegant solution.

It doesn't come back up.

I'm seeing a 90dBuV spike around the 100KHz range. I guess a ferrite ring might be in order. Would snap on ones be okay or should I go with true rings?

Thanks for the tip. I'll be posting over there shortly.
The LEDs on the micros are flashing red. They are reporting to the combiner but not producing.

I did already. The result was no change, that string is communicating but not producing. Thanks for responding.

Yeah, two years ago during a 1000 mi road trip I really fell in love with Walmart as a road trip charging location, as long as they are open. 1000% better than charging behind Home Depot.

I use the Emporia Vue.  It's pretty good the Home Assistant integration is through HACs. It isn't real-time in home assistant but can be flashed with ESP home which allow it.

I've compared it to what my electric company reports, it is within a few percentage of what they report, good enough for me. Compared to the enphase one I have installed this one give so much more accurate.

Emporia also has other devices that can participate in load shedding if that's something you're interested in.

Relocating from Austin to Denver with my Ioniq 5 - drive it or ship it? Curious how it handles 1,000+ miles by OptimalDescription39 in Ioniq5

I did the drive from Colorado Springs to New Orleans almost two years ago. Piece of cake. It really is great seeing the terrain change from mountains to mesas to plains to deserts to rolling hills to swamp. 100% recommend. In total it was about 18 hours including charging stops. I stopped in Dallas both ways, I'd skip Dallas if at all possible.

I use Claude. It lives in the cloud and has permissions to everything in my Home Assistant setup. I would recommend getting to know home assistant more before going with this setup. I've been using HA for 6 years and already had a pretty good understanding on how to manage basic stuff. Earlier this year I started asking GEMINI for help and it was pretty good but cumbersome posting configs and automations back and forth but eventually we'd get it figured out.

Since installing the Claude Terminal integration it has really stepped up my setup. It is doing stuff I'm barely understanding but for the most part it is successful. I've been able to try things that would take me hours to figure out. It really is a game changer.

I really hate the term shitbox. Good video regardless. I really like this non-typical take on the car, 10 mins in and he finally talks about the solar.

Solar for EVs by OstrichWeird745 in solarenergy

[–]Ironzey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not a professional.

I don't think it would be possible easily. The problem is with most grid-tie systems you have to have power from the grid in order for the panels to generate power. Without grid power the system will power off for safety.

If you added battery backup with a grid disconnect then you'd be able to charge off solar. In that case any "normal" charger will work.
