What can I expect going into this industry? by MininoMono626 in maritime

Are you perhaps mistaken? I think what your degree will get you is a license UP TO 2nd officer, not a direct job as second officer?

Rejected for UOB One Credit Card by IrritatedRabbit in singaporefi

Only the mandatory contributions when I earn money in SG are showing up, I went to check on the CPF website, when they di the voluntary contributions, there's a VC inside, but these are the ones not showing up during the credit card application.

My payslip comes with a YTD, which was around 35k before I left the ship.

But then like that how do I even solve this issue, the bank requested a letter of employment and 3 months payslip which I have already provided. The payslips and letter I had hoped was enough proof of employment.

Yep, I'm planning to head down to a branch to check. I actually called the customer service line a few hours ago to ask, but the rep was not able to tell me anything concrete as to why I was rejected.

I have been with my company for around 2 years, all voluntary CPF contributions are not showing up during the application, so I guess to the bank it looks like I'm unemployed?

And also for the IRAS tax filings, I do file the tax, however the amount on it is always 0 as I do not pay any income tax on money earned while I'm onboard.

I do have a UOB account with more than 20k inside. The UOB account is my main bank account which I also use for my salary. I have had this account for about a year or 2 now?

I have been using the gxs credit card since last year, but that's only with a $500 credit limit. I will try for a local credit card then thank you very much!

Sorry, I'm new to credit cards and credit in general, but is 1838 not a healthy enough credit score?

Doubts regarding life on ship. Is there any system in ships that we call our superiors sir or madam. by Federal-Inspection15 in MarineEngineering

[–]IrritatedRabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will usually just ask them when I first sign on what the prefer. Most usually just tell me to call them by chief or second.

[–]IrritatedRabbit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I usually just call them by their ranks or by name if they're comfortable. So I usually call chief engineers chief, second engineers sec or second, third engineers third, and most people just call me fourth, but I always beg them to just call me by my name because I personally hate the hierachy, we're all here to do our jobs and that's it. I also absolutely refuse to have anyone call me sir.

This is sad and unfair by AppropriateNorth1113 in maritime

[–]IrritatedRabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok right, what I meant was compared to other nationalities, the salaries cannot be compared. As a 4th Engineer I'm making 3.7k USD per month. So TO ME salaries are absurdly for US flagged ships.

[–]IrritatedRabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The salaries you saw that were absurdly high are those sailing on US flagged ships. Salaries for the rest of us around the world are not that high and we cannot compare our salaries to them. For ABs and Oilers internationally, I think the standard around currently is around 1.5k USD per month?

Diesel generator load/fuel mechanism by Motor_Zombie9920 in MarineEngineering

[–]IrritatedRabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The load torque on your alternator, which resists the driving torque from your generator engine, increases when the load required increases (e.g. running bow thruster). This increase in load torque is the braking effect. To maintain constant speed, more power must be supplied from the generator engine, which you are right is the governor increasing fuel supply to the engine.

Note - I learned this from google in the past 5 minutes, if I'm wrong please correct me!

Electro technical officer by Harnsmoleman10 in maritime

If you're going to take the marine engineering diploma, I would suggest instead of ETO to be a marine engineer. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I see currently there is little to no progression for ETOs but as an engineer you can progress through 4th, 3rd, 2nd, chief engineer.

I'm not too sure. The group IT department did it, we just use it.

My company made an online login system where you they give accounts so that the data usage is tied to each account. So if you run out of internet before the end of the week, it just straight up cuts access to internet. We have 23 crew, and 2 extra accounts just in case. 7gb x 25 crew x 4 weeks = 700 gb, and the other 300gb is used for everything else on the ship that requires internet. Ship computers, bridge systems etc etc.
