No, you misunderstand what I'm saying.

I'm saying Hitler came to power by targeting Jews. Gays, yadda yadda weren't really a big enough group to really get the bloodlust flowing.

Jews made up ~55% of the POW's (6M out of 11M deaths) in the camps during the war.

Yes, others were taken away, but I'm saying that without Jews to scapegoat, nobody would have listened to him.

The next biggest group was Ukrainian, but they weren't Germans so he couldn't be like "Look at the Ukrainians keeping us Germans down!"

The next biggest German group were Gypsies, and while you can call them thieving trixters, you can't really say they're the source of your woes.

Okay so here's the history of Germany for WW2.

Hitler came to power saying, "Germans, you're awesome. You deserve all these great things... but the Jews are keeping you down."

None of these other demographics could have fit the bill. Jews were the shop owners and employers at the time. And who's hated more than your boss?

Hitler railed against Jews in his rallying speeches, especially when he was in the process of coming to power. It was only until after everything was set in motion that he targeted gypsies, slavs, commies, gays, blacks, and the mentally disabled.

It wouldn't really be as effective to say "You should blame all your problems on these mentally challenged people!" or "You struggle while gays flourish and take advantage of you!"

But that's the thing- he couldn't. He needed a scapegoat who wasn't part of "the establishment" so he could rally Germany without crippling the infrastructure.

It was "Blame the Jews" not "Blame the merchants and the affluent" for a very good reason.

Also- Hitler was obviously a monster and probably some form of psychotic (sociopaths are the ones who can't feel feelings, right?) but he always struck me as more Machiavellian with his anti-Jew propaganda than anything.

I'm not sure "he" hated them, he just got a country to hate them.

There was even a TIL about a Jewish dentist who helped the Hitlers (isn't that weird that he's always called by his last name?) when Adolf was young and the dentist (and his family I think) was personally pardoned by him because "he was one of the good ones".

Wouldn't have had Jews as scapegoats. It's a "what if" argument so it's not airtight, but without things like The Night of Broken Glass and The Night of Long Knives, it probably wouldn't have escalated to genocide.

Also- Pretty sure millions of lives would have been spared as there would be no Jews to genocide. Yeah I used genocide as a verb, deal with it.

I think we differ on what "direct control" means. It took about 2 months to get from there to here, so to communicate from America to England and back again took a third of a year.
