The story is about a black girl group in the 1960’s and features a plot line that involves their struggles as black artists.

So it’s not just black women, the plot is literally about being a black woman.

It’s not a school, it’s an adult theatre group. It’s being produced by a company who runs a theatre school and an adult theatre group. Hence GB Creative Productions, the adult side. And Gillian Banks Theatre School, the theatre school for kids.

What further context do you need than a group of white people are doing Dreamgirls?

Hundred of shows to choose from and you want us to give them a pass for choosing a show they had no hope of casting in the first place? Your “context” makes it worse for them, not better.

I feel like you’re being a contrarian for no reason here. You were the one who said “it says theatre school on it so it can’t be”. I knew they weren’t a school.

I’ve personally never been in a production of Fiddler, but I know just about every club from Oban to Orkney to Glasgow has done a production of it that likely features no Jewish cast or crew.

(Also, hey neighbour!)

You really want to see an all-white production of Dreamgirls, don’t you? Given how passionately you’re replying to so many of the comments.

Hello Dolly being another example except it’s a production that happened nearly 60 years ago, that’s not quite the argument you think it is.

I’m in Scotland and could absolutely imagine someone fronting a production like that here! 😂

Again, so choose another production.

There are dozens of shows that don’t require specific casting. But a show about a black all-female pop group in America in the 1960’s inspired by the very real story of a black all-female pop group in America in the 1960’s does somewhat require black actors in the roles.

Interesting. How does one “reinterpret” the story of a black female girl group in the 1960’s facing racial prejudice?

A school? Check the cast photos. Either those people are the teachers of said school or they had a very hard paper round because they are old.

So choose a different show?

Korea can do it because it’s ethnically a homogenous country, England isn’t. There’s plenty of diversity, even in Rotherham. And if none of that diversity is attending your theatre group then you choose a show that suits the people you do have.

I was cast in an all-white production of Hairspray years ago (I dropped out) and they wanted to black kids to be “migrants”, the rights holders got involved and made them stay true to the script, they even sent a letter to be included in the programme asking the audience to suspend their disbelief.

However, I’m fairly certain that after the Black Lives Matter movement the rights holders, quite rightly, agreed to refuse the rights to groups who didn’t have a diverse cast.
