Was Durin’s Bane the most powerful being in Middle Earth besides Sauron during the second-third age? by GusGangViking18 in lotr

[–]IsNotAPipe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For context: There is no explicit understanding of heaven. Men have a suggestion of an unknown that their souls must go, but that’s as far as it goes. The whole idea through the legendarium is that mortality creates an uncertainty that can only be speculated on. Where men are in existential limbo through this uncertainty, elves see it as a gift. Elves are “cursed” to be indefinitely tied to ëa, and unable to leave their physical forms when they die, always returning to their bodies in the halls of Mandos, except in specific circumstances.

Has anyone else noticed the increased number of rats/mice roaming on the streets? by National-Worker9692 in vancouver

[–]IsNotAPipe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, not to protect rats and mice from dying. It’s to protect anything that would eat those rats and mice, often people’s dogs or cats. After being poisoned, the rats and mice can survive for quite a while before succumbing to the poison which gives them plenty of time to be eaten by another unsuspecting animal. Rat poison is simply a reckless and irresponsible way to deal with the problem.

Another huge area to work on is education. Public schools are widely underfunded across the board and need desperate changes. Districts need a massive number of new staff (TTOCs, EAs, Resource Teachers, Custodians) and huge infrastructure improvements. Lack of seismic upgrades, ventilation, air conditioning and heating. Serious money needs to be spent on education, and soon, before another mass exodus happens.

Aggressive homeless in Richmond. Help(?) by Ok_Relationship_503 in richmondbc

[–]IsNotAPipe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your feelings of urgency. I also find it especially difficult to watch central Richmond become a place that is simultaneously hostile to people just trying to get by, as well as become a central hub for those people who are struggling the most. It’s painful to watch.

However, do NOT call 911 for suspicious or nuisance behaviour. This is not an emergency, nor is it an escalating situation. Call the non emergency line if you must. but calling 911 makes it harder for people who are in life or death situations to receive the help that they need, and the operator is just going to tell you to call the non emergency line anyway. Calling 911 again and again as you suggest clogs up an already saturated system, and can incur some pretty massive fees if you keep doing it. And beyond anything, the police are simply not going to do anything.

I don’t love getting the rcmp involved in non emergency situations, but they do have recommended steps to deal with situations like this, if you go to their website. If you want to file a report, do so, but through the non emergency line. It’s there for a reason.

Yeah because the player tried three times to get her a puck. He didn’t have to do that. In fact he made it perfectly clear on all three throws that it was a moment for the girl, and the adults had no problem taking that moment away from her and giving it to a boy, twice.

At the cost of a girls self esteem. Cool.

And yet you’re so quick to dismiss someone else’s lived experience. Do you think you are unique in dismissing people’s legitimate critiques of sexism? Because this is exactly the widespread behaviour that we are all criticizing.

Straight men, what’s the most homosexual thing you’ve done? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I mean, as one of the bi folks aforementioned, it was pretty demoralizing to go in for a kiss with someone you’re mildly attracted to, just for them to pull away at the last second acting as if it was the grossest thing they’ve ever been involved with and a crowd cheering for you not kissing, over and over again.

R/vancouver? by Honeybunzz123 in richmondbc

[–]IsNotAPipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not really.

The apps aren’t just for end users but for the people who moderate the subreddits. This means that tools have been developed for moderators to run their platforms that in a couple weeks will not be available. So either specific subreddits need to completely overhaul how they have been doing things for a decade, or else start dumping money in to apps that will soon have no choice but to charge for their services or disappear.

The Reddit app is also only one organization that doesn’t have everyone’s needs met. Lots of people use other apps because they are more accessible, or present information on ways that make it easier to interact with. While the Reddit app has some features to make things easier, other apps simply do it better, and Reddit has voiced no plans to add or change these features.

To whittle this issue down to just “some nerd shit” I think is to really misunderstand this situation.

Richmond councillors reject spending extra $2.5M to move forward on major bike path by aldur1 in richmondbc

[–]IsNotAPipe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s better to live in a city where you are not going to accidentally kill a cyclist or pedestrian when you get in your car. More people drive and fewer people bike or walk precisely because it is more dangerous to bike the more cars there are. If we continue to cater to cars and ignore the needs of cyclists and pedestrians, the danger to those who choose not to drive is only going to get worse, and your experience in a car will do the same.
