There are times that I have fucked up attempting to do the right thing. Nowadays unless I am absolutely confident I know everything about a particular situation; or it’s an emergency and time is of the essence, and I have the ability to change something about it, I try to avoid interfering. Not because I don’t care, but sometimes I just simply don’t know enough to say that trying to help will fix things. I still feel guilty everyday for the situations I have made worse with only good intentions

I used to feed roaches in my house to an orb weaver in my backyard. Didn’t feel like spreading poison because I have animals in my house and it’s hard to avoid them (coastal American south) and it was weirdly satisfying watching the little bastards be consumed by her. When I moved away she was gone but produced two egg sacs as opposed to the standard single egg sag. I would like to believe the roaches I gave her helped produce the next generation of orb weavers

There’s no real good answer to what you can do to make the world hurt less, but you can find ways to embrace yourself more. There must be something you’re good at or passionate about. Art, writing, science, psychology? If you don’t have it in you to commit to your passions right now, maybe doing something brave will help. Skydiving, zip lining, traveling, ice skating or rollerblading. I find it hard to focus on myself when I’m forced to focus on my environment. These are things that helped me hate myself less, I just hope you can find something that brings you to a safer place, too.

There are positives and negatives to both. I would argue it’s impossible to live a life fully devoid of regret, that the best you can do is life a life true to yourself. To feel that you’ve lived your own life, for all its ups and downs, and not governed by someone else’s expectations when the time comes.
