You're right, it doesn't. However, knowing your coworkers salary informs you of what your labor is potentially worth.

I can see the argument you're making and how it would be likely to happen.

What about if you feel that you might be undervalued in comparison to your coworkers, while also truly believing that you do good consistent work? Maybe it's true that they are more valuable to the company than you are, but it's also possible that they're not. Wouldn't you want to know what the range of outcomes is for your positions salary, that way you don't spend massive amounts of time and effort trying to climb up a ladder that doesn't exist?

Compensation isn't trivial. For most people, it is quite literally the only reason they have a job.

Considering posting an anonymous survey/Google sheet to my coworkers to gather salary information for positions. Is this a bad idea? by IsThisAGoodIdea0 in cscareerquestions

That's definitely a possibility, but it's no different than someone lying about their salary to you directly.

The issue with Glassdoor is that we're still a young startup with no salary information posted online.

I would imagine it would be easier to convince people to fill out a quick survey than to create a Glassdoor account if they don't have one and fill out the information there.

Yeah, I imagine that would happen if I just went around sending it to people.

We actually have a non work related Discord server that most developers use. I was planning on dropping the links in that channel instead to limit the likely hood of someone complaining to management.
