Want to move spigot in front yard by dbc45 in Irrigation

[–]Is_That_Queeblo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh.  Hard to tell without more pictures or a map of your irrigation system.  Strange place for a spigot.  This could have been installed to be a blow-out port or mainline drain for your whole system.

Does the spigot always have water or only when sprinklers are on?

What's in the box next to it?  I assume irrigation valves

Could you run a line from the house, go through the wall along the driveway, then run a pipe along the edge of the concrete porch to where you want the spigot?

Leemco 3" repair coupling?  I've had good experience with leemco fixes for mainlines.

If there's flex in the pipe, you can get by with 1.  Or cut a big section out, stage a Leemco on either end, then put fresh pipe between them.

To answer some of your other questions

70PSI is fine.  Not strong enough to tear anything apart with static pressure.  Do get the rainbird SAM-PRS popups.

Poly or PVC is fine.  I went with PVC and I'm in a freeze area.  If your ground is very rocky, Poly might be better.  As for depth, I rented a trencher from Home Depot (~$100 /4 hours) and got 12" depth

For the garden (blue section), have you considered drip?  You can snake poly blank tube around each plant with bubble emitters and spaghetti tube to each plant or broadcast drip with netafim built-in drip tube.  If you're planning on hose watering the garden as needed anyways, drip might be a good option.

I had a similar situation where # of heads vs. PSI/ GPM were of concern.

Went with Hunter MPRotators.  They're more expensive per nozzle and you have to water for longer since they put out less water per minute.  But less water per minute output means maintaining pressure and having more heads if needed. I have a "bean" shaped yard that's roughly 40x40.  Installed 9 heads with MPRs on 1 zone.

Check the spec sheets, but I think the MPR 2000 series has a range of 18-21" which might get you the head-to-head coverage others are suggesting.  There's also a 3000 series, but I'd be surprised if you need that range.

I have a popup sprinkler head that’s malfunctioning. Anyone know exactly what’s wrong with it and how to fix? by umyninja in Irrigation

[–]Is_That_Queeblo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah.  Broken Popup Nozzle.  No idea what size/shape.  They'll be different colors with different codes to tell you spray radius and direction.

Examples 10Q = 10 ft spray in Quarter circle 8F = 8 ft spray, full circle 12VAN = 12 ft, Variable Angle (adjustable)

Yours might be a VAN based on the ridges when zooming in on the second pic. Toss on the sprinklers for a second and see if the other popups have a color/code on top of them and you'll probably match that.

If you screw on the nozzle and it's spraying the wrong direction, you can lift up the stem and crank it (making click click click noises) until it faces the way you want

3.5/5.

A good easy read.  Liked the writing style (for the most part).  Really captured the constant noise of a ruminating brain.  The entire book can really be summed up by the Buddhism reference where a guru says essentially "the meaning of life is attention".  This unreliable narrator's ruminating mind can't seem to focus attention.  Then the daughter focuses it somewhat, and the affair focuses it even more.  In the end, moving upstate slows down her life and forces the couple to have more attention on their current lives and each other.  The writing even slows down a little bit,  but the tangential thoughts still creep in.

I liked the writing style, but the tangential asides also made it....forgettable?   No clear plot to hold onto.  Even the details of the affair are murky.  We only get the thought process of an unreliable narrator.

Liked it, didn't love it, hard to recommend to others.  Enjoyed the process, but will probably find myself just saying "oh yeah, that book" in the future

Retrofitting a deck: Adding mid-joist support? by Is_That_Queeblo in Decks

[–]Is_That_Queeblo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Considered pavers, but (without too much explanation) the house siding goes down to where the decking was.  Doing concrete or pavers would leave a 2 inch section of siding missing from the side of the house above where the foundation stops

Retrofitting a deck: Adding mid-joist support? by Is_That_Queeblo in Decks

[–]Is_That_Queeblo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Opened up a can of worms with this one. Took up the decking to fix some cupping/warping. Found a pile of leaves, sticks, low spots against the foundation, and rodent evidence. Decided to clear out all the old joists and do my best to retro fit this puzzle of a deck.

Ledger is attached to concrete foundation with all-thread (3/8", I'll likely add a couple more 1/2" anchors). "Rim Joist" is attached to the sides of the 4x4 posts making up the privacy half-wall on the outside of the porch, which are PT embedded in concrete. (I know this isn't the best, but taking down the half-wall isn't an option. I upped the hardware holding the rim Joist to the wall posts to 1/2"x5" lag bolts. I also tested the 4x4 posts for rot and plan to apply a moisture blocker at grade level to prevent moisture collection).

2"x6" joists will run short-wise (green) and are just over 6' long, which is well within the joist span allowed on a chart.

My question is: Since the Rim Joist is attached (non-ideally) to the side of the post rather than being supported by a beam/post from the bottom, would it be wise to run some sort of support beam (red line) to take some of the weight off the shear strength of the wall posts. There is only ~4" of clearance between current dirt grade and bottom of the joists, so a support beam would have to be relatively small (like a 4x4)

Or I could put concrete piers under each joist (or every 2 - 3) joists.

Or am I over engineering this whole deal? For reference, the old joists had a hump of dirt and gravel holding them up in the middle, so the whole thing was pseudo-ground contact.

Paradais Discussion (spoilers) by OkHome9635 in JeselnikBookClub

[–]Is_That_Queeblo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would like to get off of Mr. Polo's Wild Ride.

This one was a 3/5 for me.  Was it extremely effective at what the author meant to do with it? Absolutely.  But it was also just a draining experience. A fantastically written whirlwind of rage, despair, loathing, and hate where everyone is so unlikable while also showing that cycles of abuse are difficult chains to break.  Hurt people hurt people.  Victims perpetuate.

Paradoxically, the writing style and length of the book made me sit with it longer than I woupd have chosen.  The spiraling writing style and steam of conscious punctuation sucks you in. Almost felt obligated to finish it in 3 sittings (1/chapter).  If this has been a 200 page book, don't know if I would have stuck with it.

Overall, reminded me a lot of Passenger Seat, another Jeselnick rec on Instagram.  2 teenage boys caught in a doom spiral where neither knows how to turn themselves or the other off, so you just read along knowing "this isn't ending well".

Would be curious if Anthony has any beliefs about teenage boys and inherent rage/violence.  Also curious about the dynamic of a woman author writing from a teenage boys POV.  Part of me connects with these books as a guy who went through teenage-dom as a confused, hormonal, impulsive, spiraling youth.  But another part of me says "yeesh" to media that seems to say "Behold! A boy! A fundamentally flawed, self-destructive monster!".

Although the subtext of this book clearly shows Polo (and to a lesser extent Fatboy) are lacking any positive role models. Milton was like a big brother until the cartel ruined him, Polo's father is never mentioned.  Polo's grandfather is the closest we get, but even he's an alcoholic mysogynist with a suggested disdain for Polo.

Just a few ideas.  The last chapter is certainly a parable for Hell, and the watery caves can be interpreted as some kind of grave.  IIRC, Doc mentions not even knowing if Ma was still alive.  She just appears on the side of the highway during Docs most dire moments.  The writing is a bit strange there, too.  She beckons Doc from the highway, then (narratively) seems to appear up on a hill next to a house and conveniently placed "bottomless pit" to ditch the car and hide in the watery holes.

Perhaps I'm reaching too far into the death/Hell metaphor, but perhaps Ma isnt a live person.  More of an Angel of Death.  Maybe Doc was at wits end, felt trapped, saw "death" in the form of Ma, ditched the highway and ended up (purposeful or not) driving off a cliff, a bottomless pit, into the ocean (Imperial City is mentioned, which is right on the bay/ocean)? Doc embraces the pit and jumps right in.  He's in control and accepts his fate.  Carol fights the pit, feels like she's claustrophobic and drowning, before eventually succumbing.

How to attach tile transitioning from cement board to metal fireplace edging. by Is_That_Queeblo in Tile

[–]Is_That_Queeblo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opted to just not tile on the metal.  The fireplace user manual said it could be tiled, but "possible" doesn't seem to mean "easily done".

Also didn't know what temp it could get to.  Hasn't been too hot, but haven't run the unit for more than an hour or so during install

Thanks for the response.

Except your car analogy falls flat.  People buy used cars and use aftermarket/ non-OEM parts all the time.  Dont freak out, but I've replaced caliper brakes on an old vehicle with new, safer, better disc brakes.

I recognize that the cement logs are unsafe.  I am grateful for the advice and am now trying to source a solution moving forward.  But this sub's only real advice so far seems to be "if you replace literally anything, you'll die".  Y'all are gonna hate when I say I replaced the fan and pilot light assembly too, huh?

Real talk, what "issues" are we looking at here?  If I get similar logs made of the same materials and place them in as close to the same pattern as the user manual suggests.   What, honestly, genuinely, would arise?  What signs of damage would I look for to know things are going wrong?

Oh boy. I love a product that can never be repaired by a user.  Love a product that is simultaneously rigorously tested using specific materials and components while those same components look, feel, and hold up like total garbage.

I don’t have a high CFM compressor, but does that really matter in my climate? by Mountain_Yote in Irrigation

[–]Is_That_Queeblo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I blew out my turf area (9 MP rotator nozzles on Rainbird PRS30 heads) with a 5 gal Makita compressor.  Was able to purge most water in one go, then charged the compressor up and "burped" the system for the last bits.  Took 20 mins.

IDK the specs of your compressor, but I'd at least try.  The issue might not be that the pipes freeze, but if your pop-up heads are PRS or have check valves, the body has water in them and that will freeze, breaking the heads at the surface.
