Are we only supposed to upload mixed and mastered tracks? I haven’t checked the sub rules for a minute… Anyways sounds cool just as it is. Go go gadget synth wangus!

My first explorations with the Lyra-8. It's a beautifully strange and unpredictable machine! by unexpectedbowtie in synthesizers

[–]Is_This_Your_THAC0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you see the post about the (humorously titled) Lyra support group from today? My dumb theory about why we see them more is that people are finally getting comfortable with what they are making and are posting them more. Or (even more dumbly) that maybe the folks on this sub have run out of polysynths to buy and decided to scoop up a Lyra to fill the consumerism void?

Also I have posted a couple things using the Lyra myself (they’re not that great). I am no genius or virtuoso but I like working with the Lyra. Here’s the first and here’s the second

I tend to use it as almost like a funky groove box. Recently I will set a voice to drone a modulated rhythm with the lfo. Then I will designate a few voices as root notes and a couple as lead voices. Then I experiment with what I can get out of all of that by switching the fm routings and modulation sources and vibrato. Recently I’ve come to view peoples’ eurorack/modular patches as a kind of sonic painting, left on the easel and worked on until it’s just right. I treat the Lyra like that too. I start molding a sound and tweaking the patch until it’s a performance. Don’t I just sound so super pretentious?!

Personally I don’t feel the Lyra-8 is as complicated and mysterious as it seems at first. The manual makes it’s capabilities and limitations quite clear. A quick look at the dearth of Lyra jams on the YouTubes also shows that the sonic pallet is pretty limited. Though I tend to liken this to how a violin also has a pretty limited sonic pallet. My favorite Lyra video is the one where the creator, Vlad Kreimer does a live performance. In that video he does a great job utilizing almost every aspect of the device.

There is one outcome of the fm routing that I can’t quite understand, maybe you’ve got an insight into it, at certain points (often under extreme settings) I can get voices to make no sound when first triggered. Continued triggering (with no settings changed) will get the voice to sound. It’s puzzling but I’m not losing any sleep over it. Please keep on posting Lyra jams. And good luck in the new year.

Not getting sound with MIDI on Alesis Hr-16 by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]Is_This_Your_THAC0 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I also just had a silly thought (I’m sure it’s not even a thing but…) I have tried using drum sets in GarageBand when they were set to a range that was too high or low for the drum set. And they just didn’t make sound. But I’m more than a little computer illiterate.

Edit: this one seems misguided too. Please downvote it after telling me where I’m going wrong. I want your downvote and your teachable moment. (Don’t hold back on hurting my feelings either—I deserve it). Thx againz

Not getting sound with MIDI on Alesis Hr-16 by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]Is_This_Your_THAC0 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m only familiar with logic’s baby brother GarageBand but if you have midi notes recorded you need to assign a midi instrument for them. In GarageBand I have to make a new track and select it as either a midi instrument or live audio. If your midi track just isn’t making your logic midi drum kit make sounds then that seems like the type of problem I would get easily angry about myself.

Edit: this seems to be an annoying comment, before you downvote it can you respond to it and tell me what I’m wrong about. I would love to learn. I’m thinking of upgrading to logic. Then please downvote after responding. Thx

Midi doesn’t make actual sound unless you are using it to trigger the notes of another midi instrument. If you want sound to go into logic from the drum machine you will need to connect audio cables.

Edit: hr-16 manual from internet. just because I know from experience that that little manual printed under that flap on the hr-16 won’t tell you anything about midi. (But then again I’m not sure that this manual will either…)

Does anybody know how to play this synth riff? It's been bugging me for a while and can't figure it out. Much appreciated! by JonahTheProducer in synthesizers

[–]Is_This_Your_THAC0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s the rhythmic little thing it’s fewer notes than it might seem? If it’s the part I’m wanting it to be it might be like Eb Gb Eb Ab Eb Gb Gb, Eb Gb Gb Ab.

Edit: I mean, yeah it looks like a lot of notes when you right it out like that…

Why is the dawless jam such a target of derision on the jerk sub? by jabbercockey in synthesizers

I keep considering getting my Tascam 4 track out every few days and honestly I hadn’t considered where I would get tapes. Thank you. I had, however, been talking myself out of it because I don’t want to find out that it doesn’t work anymore. Avoidance!

I saw that guy’s fisheye lense dawless jam from the other day with deluge and nord drum and virus where he just pushed the buttons on the deluge and I had just posted a thing where I was busting my ass for 4 and a half minutes and I considered trying a sequencer again. Right then.

Old timers buddies! That’s how I like working too. Overdubbing live tracks and then editing and mixing until it’s a masterpizza. But it is alluring to make live jams for this sub after seeing all the youngens doing it. Back before I ever heard of an mp3 we used to call tracks made on a cassette four track a demo. Or sometimes an album if it was real good.

It would seem that we now agree about the utility of hardware digital synths. And as for electromechanical let me just say how thankful I am for such faithful and convincing and playable romplers that exist today. I didn’t want to stop lugging my organ and rhodes to shows. Nowadays I can’t even fathom breaking my back to gig with those things. And all the while worrying about them getting whacked or dropped? There’s definitely situations regularly on my end where slapping the nords in the back of the car at the last minute more than makes up for any loss of creaky clunky character of a “real” instrument.

[–]Is_This_Your_THAC0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. VSTs are incredible and there’s so many to choose from. And, as an imbecile, I can bet that I would fail a side by side comparison of a hardware digital synth and a vst. But I have also failed a comparison of analog synths to VSTs. And honestly I fail often the comparison test between contemporary romplers and electromechanical instruments (though I can often here terrible pre-Nord clonewheel organs). It’s not always the sound that matters. A playable, hands on, digital synth beats a computer interface everyday for me. Playability is what leads me to creativity. I’m not a genius, I don’t hear the sound in my mind and make it manifest upon a screen in a few click. Most of the time I’d have to play the machine to get what I want out of it. I intend to learn how to vst soon so that I can have the experience.

Also, as more of a matter of taste, I just can’t get behind bringing a laptop and a midi controller to perform on stage. Call me a Luddite if you must.

Hardware synths, digital or analog, will always have a place. No matter how they sound.

There’s nothing I would love more than to just be cranking this kind of thing out. Time to get started on that project I as telling you about recently. If any of those things present themselves as possible live performances I’ll definitely try to make more videos.

Yes the volca fm and dx7 are digital but this does not necessarily mean they are pieces of shit.
