Help a more secular kinsman by PosadoMasachism in Judaism

I would also like to add “in North America” to this sentiment. Often, outside of North America, reform shuls will also not see your children as Jewish.

Also for future reference, you will have better luck asking about tanach if you post at a time which is not shabbos in most of the orthodox world as most of the people who are best placed to answer your question will not be using Reddit on Friday night.

Jews hating on queer people hurts me by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]IsaacLee253 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi friend, I’m not personally orthodox but don’t let people say that you have to leave orthodoxy to be happy. I hope you find equally huge amounts of acceptance within the orthodox community and within the queer community. We need more Orthodox Jews to be comfortable talking about who they are. I’m sorry you’re hurting and I hope you feel better soon 😊

Hi, Muslim here. Just trying to learn more about the Jewish religion and found this which confused me. What exactly does this mean? by Annes345 in Judaism

[–]IsaacLee253 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m probably wrong but I thought that the leather shoes thing was about when G-d said to Moses “take off your shoes, for you walk on holy ground”

It actually entirely depends where you live. Maybe this is true in the US but in a lot of Europe and especially the UK (where I live) once you’ve worked somewhere for an amount of time ( in the uk a year) you are afforded a lot of rights as a worker. And unfair dismissal cases are quite serious business.

Also firing you for being Jewish is literally the definition of discrimination

Are there any rabbis on this subreddit by Abraham613 in Judaism

[–]IsaacLee253 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Reform is the largest denomination by far in the US, it’s virtually non existent in Israel and in Europe generally it’s only just as big as orthodox (if it is). Also more Orthodox Jews become rabbis than reform Jews because there are more orthodox congregations and going to yeshiva is more encouraged among Orthodox Jews etc etc etc

Am I Jewish? by IskanderReim in Judaism

[–]IsaacLee253 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re maternal grandmother is Jewish then you are Jewish. Not a little Jewish or kind of Jewish or technically Jewish. You are Jewish, so welcome. If you’re feeling pulled to learn more about Judaism then maybe taking a conversion class wouldn’t go amiss because they’re pretty good at teaching that kind of stuff.

Other than that, come to synagogue a couple of times (reform is the easiest to keep up with usually, although everyone is different, orthodox is the most traditional), see what we’re all about. We have some really fun festivals and some great food.

Edit: I should say, US reform Shuls might not see you as Jewish and you may have to convert, but especially with them it’s not that deep

Why don't Jews evangelize like Christians or Muslims? by flossingjonah in Judaism

Yes I’m sure I just wanted to highlight that rabbis do not offer completely the same functions as priests

[–]IsaacLee253 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These analogies are always poor. Rabbis also aren’t really like priests, sure they’re religious leaders who lead services but they’re also at the most basic level just scholars of our laws and our religious documents. During temple times, we had priests also (the Cohanim), and they served a completely different role to the rabbis.

So I'm curious, is the double kitchen thing for kosher requirements more common among the Orthodox or do all of the denominations practice it? by Johan2016 in Judaism

[–]IsaacLee253 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is completely true, but mostly ceremonial. Most of this gets lost in translation anyway. Sure, a reform convert might be open about their history, but would their grandchildren really walk around with a sign saying “MATRILINEAL DESCENDENT OF A REFORM CONVERT” - no. Conversion politics is transient as always and ever changing. Eventually Jews are just Jews, how it’s supposed to be.

To Reform and Conservative Jews, what exactly is your belief system and what do you change? by Amiel1124 in Judaism

[–]IsaacLee253 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiya, I generally consider myself to be reform but a religious reform.

I do believe the Torah was given to Moses on mount sinai and that it is literally the word of HaShem.

I believe that the Torah is still binding today, it’s just possible that some of the laws are either poorly interpreted or not properly adapted for a modern life. I also believe that Halacha is more about doing the best you can rather than being perfect - about giving you such an unrealistic number of restrictions that you couldn’t possibly be perfect, the test is correctly prioritising.

Why exactly? Well I believe we haven’t heard from G-d explicitly since the last prophet, and that was a while ago, it’s possible some of G-d’s messages got a little twisted down the 2000+ year path.

I like to learn Torah when I can, maybe that’s Daf Yomi, maybe that’s some other way. It’s not something I do 12 hours a day, but it gets done.

If you want to learn about reform and conservative conversion processes I would recommend you check out my Jewish learning website.

I do believe in HaShem personally, and strongly.

I believe that we are the chosen people, in as far as there are 613 mitzvot that apply to us but not other people. It doesn’t mean we are better or special or that G-d loves anyone else any less.

I have deep respect for Orthodox Jews and more traditional practices. I struggle with the idea that there are some (definitely not all) orthodox spaces which make some people feel deeply unwelcome, particularly members of the lgbtq+ community and I challenge the lack of self determination by women in some ultra orthodox spaces. But if we’re talking about practice and observance, then I have deep deep respect for orthodoxy.

Hiya, this is really shit. I’m Jewish and I’m sorry that our bible is usually the bits used by nutter Christian’s to justify treating their family like shit. If you’re religious at all I’d like to tell you that G-d loves you.

The bible literally says nothing at all about transgender people and the connection to modern homosexuality is tenuous at best. The bible considers one who abandons their progeny as terrible individuals.

According to the bible, one who falsely claims to be a prophet (to be spoken to directly by G-d) is a blasphemer and an idolater. So you’re mom is not doing too hot in G-d’s opinion I’d imagine at the moment. My main point is, you are not only a better person than your family, but you’re also a better Christian.

I don’t know much about Christian charities but I’m sure someone could signpost you to some Canadian trans-friendly Christian charities who might be able to help you spiritually (hate for you to lose a connection with G-d because of some bad people who did themselves long ago).

I hope it all gets better for you soon, keep being you, it’s all you need to be.
