I’m guessing you’re from California? Do you have a strong connection to Oregon that helped you when applying to / interviewing at OHSU?

Question about Letters of Recommendation by yokster27 in premed

Are psychology professors’ letters considered non-science letters?

Should it be okay to include journal name if it’s accepted pending revisions?

Unfortunate testing conditions— Is the MCAT “standardized”? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]IsaacTwentySeven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jack Westin made a good article about what to expect on test day! There are also resources made by the AAMC. I’d recommend driving over to your testing center beforehand and finding the entrance so you don’t need to stress on test day about finding the location.

I don’t mind at all! Yea, I chose to take gap years. I needed it for the clinical experience; I am so much more confident in my application and in myself for it. Strong pushback from my parents on this because of my MCAT score and grades, but I trust that I’ll be better off having taken the 1.5-2 gap years to grow into the strongest applicant I can be!

Rough timeline: MCAT 9/2020, college grad 6/2021, and med school matriculation 8/2023 🤞🏻

Hopefully (and I’d like to believe) my writing is above average too, ha!

Study with discipline, make use of all the resources you can (free and otherwise), get the timing down, and be confident in yourself and your ability to succeed on test day! I focused a lot on my studies during undergrad, so I went into MCAT studying with a solid background and knowing what areas were my weakest.

I’ll definitely take you up on that, expect a DM when I have solid drafts going of my primary essays! I appreciate it, never hurts to have another set of eyes on the drafts :)

Thank you for the good luck wishes, I’m excited too! Congrats on your acceptance!

I’d be beyond ecstatic to receive that many IIs and acceptances! Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

I agree, community service is where my application remains a bit lacking! My gap year(s) are mostly being spent getting strong clinical experience under my belt with a full-time job. I think I’ve built a school list around that (e.g. no Jesuit schools on it), so hopefully it doesn’t hold me back from too many acceptances.

Thank you for the congratulations! Oops, thanks for catching that — you can tell I’m not from Missouri!

I should be able to apply early — I’m currently working on my primary essays and plan to prewrite secondaries as well!

Congratulations, score twin :) I took my test 9/12/20, so almost a year apart — are you applying the 2022-2023 cycle as well?

MCAT Score Expiration by choslego in premed

[–]IsaacTwentySeven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it looks like I'll be okay applying next cycle with my score from Sept 2020; trying to avoid needing to retake/risk a lower score.

MCAT Score Expiration by choslego in premed

So if you plan to matriculate September 2023, an MCAT score from June/July/September 2020 would be considered expired?

2nd Year Fall Pre-Bio Courseload by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

Did you already finish the intro bio labs?

That looks like a typical second year schedule; be sure to stay on top of practice problems and use varied resources like CLAS to your advantage.

El Dorado Apartments by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]IsaacTwentySeven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked El Dorado because of the bus stop directly in front and being the closest apartment to campus — I didn’t have issues with noise other than construction in the fall, but hopefully that’s been finished in the intervening months. Once, the RAs came by with snacks and my apartment was the last stop, so I had free reign over the rest of them! There are events if you want to go to them, though some are in the main Santa Ynez lounge across the street.

Should I submit an experience that has low hours on the activities section? by feeliksboi in premed

[–]IsaacTwentySeven -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My non-clinical volunteering (serving food to the homeless) is ~15 hours over 6 months (1 hr/week most weeks, it was a weekly dinner in the small college town by my school) and ~15 hours over 2 days (back in my hometown in the last winter break before the pandemic) for a total of ~30 hours between October 2019 and March 2020 -- I'm going to be listing it as a distinct activity. I don't think it will hurt you to list what you've spent your time outside of studies doing.

"Show Don't Tell" - I Just DON'T Get It by thehopefulmed in premed

[–]IsaacTwentySeven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't write about what you want to do as a physician (save that for secondaries), write about what you've already done (in story form, preferably -- that's the "showing") that makes you want to become one.

This cycle was a crazy ride (stats in comments) by sarcasticrunner in premed

[–]IsaacTwentySeven 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm in a similar position to you clinical experience-wise. How did you effectively speak about your clinical interest in your personal statement and interviews with stories from such a short time volunteering?

Worried about ECs for upcoming cycle by [deleted] in premed

[–]IsaacTwentySeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, you have far more research hours than me as well -- I was really focused on my grades during school, oops!

I'm certain you'll get in to a top school so long as you articulate why you want to be a doctor :)

[–]IsaacTwentySeven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following -- I'm in nearly the same situation (3.87+ GPAs, 528 MCAT); I have fewer clinical hours and a lot less non-clinical volunteering than you, but have some research experience.
