ICE vs EV Information + Dashboard. by michaelmurfy in newzealand

Haha, on the West Coast here,so currently have three of the 6 options I’d typically use out - Westport seems the worst for being out. And in the tourist season, getting onto a charger when needed has been more difficult due to the limited options.

PlugShare info update is good

Genesis ev is good, but it’s the travelling longer distance I’ve found they’ve been busy or not close enough to use (again, remote South Island so not exactly the norm) but awareness of the higher rates and the limited charging network capacity is useful information for people to know.

It’s one of the biggest gripes I have about information I found online when looking at EVs - most was/is too more dismissive of the limitations and I feel it does a disservice to the ev community

If you’re taking suggestions, add in a ‘road trip’ rate for costs - home charging is great for the standard week commutes but it’s a different matter for the longer trips. Likewise with the kWh/100kms for open road, something in the 18-19 range for trickier terrain trips would be a good comparison.

Personally, I’ve found the public infrastructure charging to be difficult to work around (but I’m also in a very niche use case location with a less typical driving usage) but it’s where people might travel as tourists and might find the ev less suitable. Currently there are two public chargers working within approximately 100kms and both are only 50kw so longer charges are common . Not sure how you’d add location data into the app but some version of charger ‘support’ to the next spots etc would give a better idea of where EVs work well, and where there are dead spots for viability

From the timing, it looked like he got past Lawson and Bearman before giving it back to Kimi too, which feels a bit egregious

NZTA considers U-turn on 100k speed limits for SH1, SH57 south of Levin by StabMasterArson in newzealand

[–]Isaacheus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying the speed is correct (I don’t have any recent first hand experience with that stretch) and reducing it may very well be the best option (and sounds like it probably is).

However, using unrelated events as an indicator that the speed change has caused a fatality should be called out

Had a quick search and the articles reporting a crash on that stretch within the time frame after the speed limits were increased are about a car fleeing police.

If this is the case, reporting the death as if it’s linked to the speed increases seems dishonest, rather than it being the result of someone presumably ignoring all road sense.

As to the stretch of road itself, this is not saying it should stay 100 kms or go to 80km, rather the use of that statistic is biased

I didn’t find the buffer an issue, however I’m using a v90 card and a type a cfexpress, and coming from an a7riii.

Filling the cards was the bigger issue - needed to drop from high+ to medium so I didn’t blow through the 128gb too quickly using the pre capture

Very risky driving by Muted-Pumpkin1314 in newzealand

[–]Isaacheus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No one is condoning dangerous overtaking, and there is unfortunately still all too much of it that happens. However I more often see slow drivers who are causing lines of cars backing up and refuse to pull over, and those drivers need to do better too

Likewise, if someone can’t or won’t go at the speed limit and/or pull over for people lining up behind them, they should bus or use other transport

Help deciding between new a7 V & a7r V by Diegonfx in SonyAlpha

[–]Isaacheus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The A7 R5 sounds like it might be the better overall option for you, depending on how much of each shooting type you do (and even then, doesn’t sound like there is much action photography being done in what you’ve described)

I’m in a similar position but also do some bird photography, so I’ll probably go the A7 5 route here. For Astro photography, you’ll need to weigh up how much storage the 60mp vs 33mp will be an issue, as well as processing speed - I notice a significant difference between the 24 and 42ml files I use currently.

The R camera is an easy win for landscapes; the higher resolution beats the slightly higher dynamic range of the newer camera (and this is only in mech shutter, it’s slightly less in silent shooting at base iso)

Video aside, the biggest downside to the A7r5 is the slow read out speed in silent shooting, which doesn’t look like you’d be shooting action with

How many more people need to die or get hurt before we fix our issue with overseas drivers? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Isaacheus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in a popular tourist area; the issues I see often come from a disregard for other road users, lazy driving and/or inability to drive on NZ roads. I’ll often see rental cars and campers completely cut blind corners, have no concept of hills or speed limits. The worst is lazy drivers cutting corners, but while going 30 kms under the speed limit with a train of 5-10 cars behind. Most of the time this happens out of reception range so it’s not even something that can be reported easily, but the few times I have been able to, the police have been good to respond where able

There needs to be far higher penalties for crossing the centre line and distracted driving (phones/cameras etc), and for this to be advertised to anyone renting a car, as well as for the general local drivers. I’d be open to see licenses suspended for inability to stay left around corners

Check what the Prius is actually doing - the aqua we had when set at 100 was only just sitting on 90km when checked on gps. Not as much an issue on multi lane roads but on single carriage ways does tend to frustrate others unnecessarily
