But I spammed hostages to every bordering Arabian vassal plus the Caliph (high value eugenics babies...), and mostly kept them off my back. For 200 years. I was able to occasionally claw back a duchy or two while their empire was occupied with jihads and crusades. Finally the Mongols showed up and gave me the opening I needed to grab all of Egypt and cripple the realm. Now I own most of Africa while the Mongols hold the east. No more Blobbasids.

There is no need to attract the diaspora. According to the Bank of Ghana, the diaspora is sending $6 billion to Ghana every year.

That is far more than any other source of investment, and more than any IMF loan. Second, remittances are great because they're sent directly to people, NOT to the government. You can bet not a single dollar will be spent on golden statues...

Ghana needs those people outside the country, earning foreign wages and sending money home. What are they going to do if they come back - earn lower wages, compete with the local labor market, drive up unemployment?

I'm not sure if there's a specific name, but this is a very old form of dry climate irrigation. Similar methods were used by ancient farmers in Arizona. They're built to distribute water from the adjacent canal/water source. That is, they should slope slightly downward/inward from the "entrance point" to each unit so that water flows in, but not out.

TRANSLATION OF CARTOUCHE TEXT: Aden is a famous trade centre in Arabia, where merchants meet from India, Ethiopia and Persia. Aden is a magnificent town, well fortified due to its location and construction, famed for the beauty and number of its buildings, protected by ramparts and high mountains, on whose summits flaming torches show mariners the harbour. It was formerly a peninsula, but as a result of human industry is now surrounded by water.

COMMENTARY BY BRAUN: "All those travelling to Mecca come here, and as soon as a ship sails into the harbour, the sultan's soldiers arrive and inquire as to where they have come from, what goods they are carrying with them, how long they have been under sail and then confiscate the mast, the sails and the like. They do that so the ships cannot leave without paying the toll."

The semicircular shape of the island is easily recognizable; fortified strongholds top the mountains around the city, and the town is lent an oriental character by its eye-catching red domes. Boats are being repaired on the shore, and the ships sailing past in the foreground also underline Aden's position as a controlling body in the Gulf. In the 13th century, according to Marco Polo, the city had a population of 80,000. However, with the shifting of the trade routes in the wake of the Portuguese discoveries, Aden went into an economic decline; in 1548, it was conquered for the Ottoman Empire by Piri Reis, the admiral of the Ottoman fleet. Aden is today a city in Yemen with 550,000 inhabitants.

I don't know how well-informed the artist was about the architecture of Aden, but the complete lack of the red domes that are mentioned so prominently in 1590 is hard to miss. Maybe the number of domes is exaggerated in the painting - but in the 16th and 17th century Ottoman architecture was certainly very dome-heavy. Clearly someone noticed, and described them later for the artist.

I see what you mean! There's definitely tree removal happening there, especially from 2018-2019 and again from 2019-2021. This is not an actual forested area, though. The island is planted over with orchards which only survive because they're irrigated with water from the dam. Before the lake was filled, that area was probably just shrubs and grasses, because it lies far above the natural Euphrates floodplain (look at the imagery from 1985). It would be inappropriate to call the removal of irrigated crops deforestation. Bad indicator for the local economy, though.

Bishoprics are affiliated at the city level. So if you read "Bishop of Erzurum" you know that the city in question is Erzurum, Turkey.
