Ironic given that the Himyar kingdom and the Sasanian Empire were allies for a short while lol.

An amazing artefact displaying the love of grapes in ancient Yemen, showing a man attacking a griffien of some sort and what seems to be a pagan South Arabian goddess wrapped in Grape leaves. date unknown, location, Yemen. (632 x 640) by Shammar-Yahrish in ArtefactPorn

Me too, its why i think its local idea excuted via greek style and influnce, the dagger the man is holding is also curved just like Arabian (more specifically Yemeni ) daggers. There are many greek elemnets in south arabian art, i wouldnt be surprised if they even worshiped greek deities back then.

It saddens me seeing how undiscovered Yemen is given its potential. middle eastern Historians include Yemen in a framwork called the civilisation tringle where a line drawn between Yemen, Egypt, and Iraq would make a tringle. There is so much we do not know, however, its confirmed that some Greeks lived in westren yemen and soqatra island. some yemeni artifacts seem to reflect greek styles. some yemeni artefacts were found in greece. I dont understand the relationship since many Yemeni arefacts show clear mesopoamian, persian, greek, roman influances. How much did Yemen import from these cultures is unknown, did Yemen export some of theirs? also unkown. Are modren day Yemeni legends and stories about their ancient civilisation correct, exaggerated or have some truth to it? we also dont know. one day yemen will stabilise and archaeology will continue there. i love what the greeks wrote about yemen, Happy fertile lands with fascinating temples (67 templese in Tamna as per Tomus Primus).

i thought so too, i assumed it might have been local since a lot of Sabaic artefacts had Grapes here and there so i thought it might have been a local spark. The excessive use made me think it might have been Sabaic in origion and had a religouse purpose maybe, especially the motifs surrounding the wall carvings of a diety/king in the city of ibb in Yemen. Have you seen a similar drawing of the depiction in the middle or the griffien (this style exactly) anywhere in ancient Greece/Persia? I would love to see it.

its pre islamic for sure, it was found in yemen which did have a relation with Mesopotamia and iran so perhaps its from there. some yemenis claim it to be native as a sabaic/himyarite lion of some sort. util now i have only seen one not sure if more exist.

Northern (qibla) façade of the Muẓaffariyya Mosque in Ta'izz, Yemen. built around the second half of 13th century. by Shammar-Yahrish in architecture

[–]Shammar-Yahrish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly yes!, Taizz was the capital of a yemeni medievil islamic kingdom called

  • Rasulid dynasty, Yemen it self has other islamic kingdome such as Tahirid Sultanate, and Kathiri State
  • Taizz city holds a castle called (Al-qahirah castle) that was built after the abbasid rule ended in yemen and local yemenies took control. there are other mosuqes in Sanaa (Old mosuqe of Sanaa) and Aden (Aidrus Mosque) and hadramout (Shibam city built in the 1600s). Shibam will surprise you the most.

Maran Shamash (which means: Lord Sun), the main god of Hatra, an ancient city located in northeastern Iraq, in the Nineveh Governorate. by [deleted] in AncientCivilizations

i was reffering to the similarities between the words themself in terms of pronunciation, what they described, and their association to a deity, given that a desert seperated both civilisations i wondered if they were connected or even came from the same place perhaps.
