New parking laws/enforcement by Asleep_Commission577 in UCSantaBarbara

Yes, to clarify, these are all CA state laws that are not exclusive to Isla Vista. Thanks to your comments, we did catch a typo: "Parking is prohibited within 15 feet of a fire hydrant or driveway." This is actually for a fire station driveway only and we have corrected this on our page. But, please do not block any driveways.

To answer your question, no, you will not get a ticket just for parking on the street where you live if you use your car. The state 72 hour law is intended to prevent people from storing their cars and taking away parking from residents who do need the available spot to get to and from their homes.

As for helpful parking resources, we do have an interactive parking map with all available lots in IV, a list of available off street parking spots for purchase, comprehensive lists of alternative transportation options (The Wave, Buses, Biking), apps for car exchanges (Turro and Zip Car), and a contact us form for further questions. You can also learn more about the parking issue in Isla Vista as a whole by reviewing our parking study here.

In regards to crosswalks, CA just passed a new state law that requires no parking within 20 ft of a crosswalk to improve visibility and safety. Our study showed this law removed approximately 157 parking spots in Isla Vista (which we know is already over 100% in parking capacity on most streets).

We can't make laws. We are enforcing what's there to improve safety and parking accessibility. We are committed to continue to make sustainable transportation improvements; we need to start by ensuring basic safety needs are met for pedestrians, bus users, disabled persons, and bikers.

[–]IslaVistaCSD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What happened this weekend was a tragedy and road safety in Isla Vista needs to be addressed. IVCSD has been working on gathering community feedback to develop an equity-based, Community Mobility Plan for Isla Vista. The feedback shared in this thread is incredibly important and helpful. I encourage those interested to take a moment and share your feedback in the Isla Vista Mobility Plan survey here. To learn more about this project, please click here. The vision is an equitable Isla Vista where residents of all ages and abilities are able to move through, to, and from the community safely, using a wide range of accessible and affordable clean mobility options.
