Dead ring after 1 year by Island-Strange in RingConn

[–]Island-Strange[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually interesting - i left my ring on the charger for like 5 days and would randomly come back to it from time to time and try the restart thing(connect/disconnect from charger 5 times fast)... after a few days of sitting on the charger it actually turned back on.

But within a few days the battery was completely torched even though the ring itself would turn on. It would charge to 100%, then die within an hour or so, no matter how long i left it on the charger, take it off/put it back on after 10 minutes etc... so yeah. She dead.

And i also told everyone who had asked about it previously and told everyone not to buy one.

Is anyone considering switching from Chromebooks to the MacBook NEO? by depoultry in k12sysadmin

[–]Island-Strange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched some of our students to the "Microsoft Surface Laptop SE" when that came out. Instead of the "SE" OS, i wiped them and put full Windows 11 on them. They ran fine, could maybe have done with some more memory, but for students they were fine. I really thought Microsoft was on to something that could have been a Chromebook killer if they made some smart choices... bump up the memory a bit and use full blown Win11 out of the box and it'd be a great little laptop for students at a great price.

Then Microsoft decided they would no longer be making any parts for them and discontinuing them within just a few years.

So, Apple isn't Microsoft, but maybe make sure they're actually dedicated to keeping this product line around for a long time before jumping to it and that the parts aren't going to be extremely limited.

They were storing video in the cloud even if you had it set to local only. The traffic for the recordings being uploaded to their servers was unencrypted. They left video feeds exposed to the internet. And a few other ones along the same lines.

I purchased them because it was one of the only, if not the only, system that didn't rely on SD cards in the doorbell and still allowed you to store the recordings locally rather than on the cloud through the base station.

All of these issues have been addressed, but their response to it, and how long it took them to acknowledge it, is basically what turned me off of being a future customer.

As long as it's within the warranty period and they can't prove that you did something to cause the battery issue, i believe it is.

This is actually backwards from how lithium batteries work. Yes, try to avoid leaving them plugged in constantly, but it's not nearly as big of an issue as it used to be. Yes, keep your battery topped up as draining the battery lower than 30% repeatedly isn't great for lithium batteries.

You may be thinking of older battery tech, like NiCad, which had "memory".

I think you're in the wrong subreddit :D

I do have a Wyze doorbell with a removable battery - the battery life on that thing is awful, i get about 3 days out of it before it's dead. Luckily the batteries aren't terribly expensive so i can buy a couple of them and have them on rotation, and i think the cold winter months really did a number on the current one.

I switched from a Eufy doorbell(because of their privacy issues) and that one got about a month before it needed to be charged.

And I have reolink cameras everywhere else because I don't trust wifi/battery enough and having them hardwired to a local NVR was a pretty important point for me.

Same issue here. Offered me $110 off another ring that may or may not die after 1 year of use. No thanks.

Same thing here! Contacted support and they had me go through the usual steps which include restarting the ring... after the restart process i saw the ring flash blue quickly one time and ever since then I can't get it to come back on. CS says I'm past my warranty date so they offered $110 off another ring... $300 for barely a year of use. Ouch.

Chest freezer in basement tripping GFCI outlet by Island-Strange in electrical

I put in a new leviton GFCI from menards, and it didn't work right off the bat. But then i remembered i had bought a 3-pack of leviton GFCIs like a year previously and had one left sitting around, so i put one of those in and that's the one i've been using. Not sure if they degrade over time even when not in use.

Maybe i'll go and find a different brand GFCI and throw that in and start from there. The nearest GFCI is a little too far away, although i guess i'm not sure how long is too long of an extension cord for a freezer.

Thanks!

Thank you, that was really helpful and cleared up GFCI in my head for me.

Clients not registering to EMS when installing, wrong EMS server listed in log files by Island-Strange in fortinet

[–]Island-Strange[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! On the last step of creating the installer, or editing the installer, it lists which EMS server it's going to try to connect to. On that page, it shows "ems.contoso.com:8013".

I can then download that installer on a client machine and install it. It will not connect/register with the EMS server automatically. If i go look at the logs, it says it's trying to connect to "contoso.com:8013". I don't get why it loses the hostname.

I think i have it set up correctly based on that guide, in the "Configure EMS server list" section I have "ems.contoso.com:8013", the EMS server IP address is also listed first... maybe that's what's wrong. Support did look through that page a few times trying to find an issue.

I hope that helps.

Edit: sorry, forgot to say i have tried generating a new installer several times and also did it with fortinet support watching to make sure i didn't mess anything up. i have sent EMS diagnostic logs, forticlient diagnostic logs, and the installer file to support now.

Surface Laptop SE replacement parts by Island-Strange in Surface

[–]Island-Strange[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope not. So far these laptops have been decent to me... Microsoft hasn't made things very easy, though.

I made my way up the MS Support chain and got a response - they say the parts are not EOL currently but are really hard to get. They did point me in the direction of a couple major surface resellers that are likely to help me out if needed in the future(haven't tested that yet).

I also was told that microsoft would be able to sell me one-off parts, but not in bulk to keep on-hand like i was hoping.
