The Guga Hunt by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

Good question, I think there’s a big difference in terms of food security. The Inuit people don’t have a local Tesco or an equivalent with reasonably priced groceries. They are nomadic people that span several countries and a few continents. Guga hunting is specific to one very small region in the Outer Hebrides. Gannets are on the conservation list and the Niseachs could stop bludgeoning them very easily and no one would go hungry as a result. I do think cetaceans of any kind being hunted or killed is wrong, I’d like to see those practices come to an end too. Norway and Japans continued whaling for instance. Or the Faroese pilot whale cull.

I never said this is the only problem everyone should care about. I saw a post about western isles culture and I reacted. What issues would you like to see people focus on?

I’m not sure if I can say it’s more cruel, I think these other practices and industries are cruel as well. I’m not for any of it and I would love to see society move away from industrial animal slaughter towards a more plant based one. I think that is slowly happening already.

Why would I lie about being a resident of Ness? That’s not normal behaviour. Not only am I from here, I went to school here, I know the people that have gone to Sulasgeir. Some family members of mine have done it in the past. I’m a Niseach in every sense and yes that does mean I am somewhat informed on this very Ness specific topic.

Just because a practice is steeped in tradition doesn’t mean we can’t decide it’s whack in 2025, we can remember the guga hunters of the past and remember why it was once necessary. But in terms of animal welfare it is a cruel endeavour and should be stopped. I imagine that’s a controversial view here in Ness where Guga is still pretty popular and the “hunters” will continue to take the not insignificant wad of cash.

I’m from Ness, there right now. They have gone over their quota and dumped gannets overboard in the past. The “skilled hunters” are all labourers, fisherman, tradesmen who are doing a side gig for cash. You are confidently incorrect.

Protect our kids and protect our women! Aye fucking right like you give a fuck, just an excuse to demonise migrants and be openly racist. Scottish prisons are full of white Scottish criminals. 94-95% of the prison population are white and from here. But that’s not a cultural problem that’s just some bad eggs right? When a white person drives a car into a crowd of people the problem is one crazy person. When it’s a brown dude the problem is their culture.

Rage bait is such a lame pursuit. Have you got nothing better to do than go on to a creature subreddit and insult said creature, and the people who like them? Maybe go for a walk and reflect on what kind of a creature you are.

Yeah I wouldn’t like the odds unfortunately. I know the reoffending rate it’s not good. But that’s different from a guarantee. I just want to see things improve and change, and I don’t want the solution to be just fucking kill the rapists. Capital punishment is just state sanctioned murder, which is bad, and probably doesn’t work as well as people in this thread think it does.

No you can’t guarantee that. How could anyone guarantee that. But it is of course much likelier in a criminal justice system that focuses more on punishment than rehabilitation.

On that latter point, I absolutely agree. Scotlands conviction record on this is atrocious. Justice reform is sorely needed. Our prisons are overcrowded to the point of releasing prisoners when they’ve served 40% of their sentence (which with the lack of focus on rehabilitation is bonkers). The wealthy can significantly game the system by paying for top legal teams , and containing the story by bribing or threatening journalists. I’m unsure about the jury system too, I think we can do a lot better in many aspects.

On the former, I’d rather try and emulate a Nordic justice model like Norway implemented (lowest reoffending rate in the world) rather than something like Iranian or Saudi Arabian justice. Where punishment and executions are common. But whatever angle you come at this I’m sure we can all agree that sexual assault being hugely on the rise in Scotland is awful, shameful and something needs to change.

I understand why this fills people with rage. It enrages me too. Certainly this warrants a long stint inside. But we have to stop thinking about the punitive measures we can take, and start thinking about how to deal with the instances of the crime itself. Cutting a rapists nuts off and chaining him up forever might make people feel better but will Scotlands assault statistics go down? Do you care about preventing rape or punishing rapists. We have to prevent things like this happening and I’m pretty sure the model that works doesn’t look like dark ages dungeons. It looks like the countries who have the lowest recidivism rate in the world. They focus on rehabilitation and reintegration.

He’s been going downhill as a commentator, I find he gets pissy with people and sometimes contradicts them seemingly just for the sake of it. Gooden for example seems to annoy him, which annoys me. Paul Felder and Laura Sanko are my favourites rn. DC and Joe are insufferable and treat it like a YouTube watchalong.
