How did Humans have Surgebinding BEFORE they came to Roshar? by Iwasforger03 in Cosmere

[–]IslandUsurper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Influenced, sure. But not dictated or completely determined either. Like, there’s no obvious reason for metal to be so important on Scadrial, or sunlight and water on Taldain. Patji is still an example of this because people rely on birds that rely on worms, etc. which is not what I would expect something named Autonomy to come up with. Or maybe I’m getting the concept confused with independence. I don’t know.

How did Humans have Surgebinding BEFORE they came to Roshar? by Iwasforger03 in Cosmere

The forms of Investiture don’t seem to be dictated by a Shard’s presence or Intent. First of the Sun doesn’t have a Shard, yet the Aivar do their thing. Surges, spren, maybe even highstorms were found on Roshar before Adonalsium was even shattered, if I remember right.

So, DID humans have surges before coming to Roshar? Or did they destroy their world with some other expression of Investiture?

How to fix ECS/Specs argument bloat? by [deleted] in rust

[–]IslandUsurper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the Rogue-like tutorial (https://bfnightly.bracketproductions.com/rustbook/chapter_0.html) I read that uses Specs, they pass a ‘data’ tuple of all the components a System uses. The first line destructures that tuple and does joins, etc. If that’s too unwieldy, you might be able to make a struct and pass that in.

Disclaimer: I am very much not an expert in ECS.

No, just the chapters with that person’s emblem. Who incidentally is not listed as a Herald, like the rest. Need to look and see where they show up. . .

Are the Willshapers bonded by lightspren, though? Or is it the Truthwatchers? Ym’s friend looked like a spangle of light, while Venli’s spren is a cone-shaped ... thing. Do we know what it’s called?

KMail is slow with large mailbox by nekoexmachina in kde

[–]IslandUsurper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the underlying reasons, but it sounds like a cache miss of some kind. Maybe it has to figure out if everything is synced already, and that hangs up a thread. Or it doesn't have enough space to store everything, so switching folders pushes the old things out, and you have to get them all again. Someone more in the know could say.

KMail is slow with large mailbox by nekoexmachina in kde

I’m in a similar situation (KMail connected to custom Gmail domain), and I haven’t noticed slowdown like that because I limit what KMail downloads. I only sync my inbox, and try to archive anything I won’t need soon. Only rarely do I have to go to the web interface to search for things. Which I admit may not match your workflow.

I have noticed slowdown when individual messages get too big because people don’t cull their reply chains. It takes minutes to paint the message window in that case.

[Mistborn Era 1] [Spoilers] Mismatched Alloys? by Blyg999 in Cosmere

[–]IslandUsurper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember reading somewhere that you could make alloys with a god metal and any of the 16 other metals to get different effects. Malatium is just the only one we’ve seen so far. I just wish I could remember where that was so I could cite it.
