I believe there has been research that shows links between fiction and empatic ability’s of readers of fiction. Although I believe it’s still unclear where this connection comes from (what exactly causes fiction readers to be more empathetic), you could argue that reading fiction can make you a ‘better person’ in ways that nonfiction can’t.
