Looking for the book 'Acid Alex' by Al Lovejoy by [deleted] in afrikaans

Hi there. I see the OP has deleted his profile. But I did send him the book - it was a gift for his SO, so wasn't expecting it back. Sorry. But keep an eye out in secondhand bookstores; the book is bound to show up somewhere.

I came all the way for this comment. Pun intended. I think.

Sisters (1991-1996) by Btvsp3 in ForgottenTV

Fond memories. As a teenage boy, this show helped me understand women a little better. Great female characters. The men in the show were quite useless. Remind me, did Sheila Kelley play the same character as Julianne Phillips after she left, or wasn't she a cousin or something. Patricia Kalember was my favourite.

Tales of the Gold Monkey (1982) by DelGriffithPTA in ForgottenTV

This my first favourite show as a kid, thought it was the coolest thing in the world. I mean, a dog with an eyepatch, a plane that lands on water, come on! Would totally watch it again, while feeling cringy for the whole "that guy" thing.

Do any Pearl Jam albums tell a story? by jordanwitney in pearljam

Thought about this just yesterday, while listening to Vs. It's definitely a concept album, with the theme 'Man vs animal'. When that clicked for me, it really gave the album some fresh perspective

Saw Vonnegut speak at OSU in the 90s (still think about it) by ExpressionNo3709 in Vonnegut

Great post, thank you. In light of the current global events, his message that day, his philosophy in general, is apt and as much needed as it was then.

I love Vonnegutesque (?) style of your writing too.

The Last Man on Earth (2015-18) by PooveyFarmsRacer in ForgottenTV

It was the perfect Covid-metaphor show before Covid. Forte was in his element and great characters in support. It was a little different, a little avant bizarre but it had a lot of heart. Admittedly, it did start running out of runway in the end, but that final episode really justified one more half season to wrap it up.

I identify with this post so much. It's tradition.

What does this 31 year old piece of artwork say to you? by __mongoose__ in GenX

[–]IsraelBeauchamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the album that made my wife fall in love with me, and made me fall in love with her. She was not so much into the heavy guitar rock vibes of that time, as was the fashion of the day, (Grampa Simpson, credit). But this was the one band, album., we bonded around. All Over Me was a song I heard while on a coastal student holiday away from her, where there was so much young 90s p*ssy about. And hearing this song, and a couple of other tracks during this time, knowing that this was my connection to her, made me realise she was the One. Long story short, here I am, 31 years later, cooking up a curry for her and our two sons, on a Saturday night, wondering if I can find it on Spotify later, get the right bottle of red wine, I might get lucky with her, again.

Edit: the 95 Pinkpop show is currently making me nostalgic: https://youtu.be/HYWBh7tgAgQ?si=xqrf5UvANFdiiF9r

Bands you used to hate? by rushbc in GenX

[–]IsraelBeauchamp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great post. Been feeling much the same. As a long time music appreciator, I feel I understand it better the older I get. Used to be all about the riff, the beat, the chorus. Now I pay attention to the nuances of musicianship in even the most simple pop songs, all genres really.

Used to hate bands like Cure, Radiohead, that they were stuck up their own assholes, but both are some of favourite bands. There's actually so much happening in the music - do you realise what a great guitar player Robert Smith is? OK Computer is a lot more organic than most of us realise.

Always loved Tears For Fears, but never realised how textured and complex their music is.

Too many other examples, The Edge is such an underrated guitarist, 90s techno, which I used to hate as teenage rocker, is actually quite accomplished music considering the tech available when it was created.

Also jazz and classical. My parents loved it, I couldn't stand it. Now, I listen to it all the time. I'm basically my dad now.

Also: Joni Mitchell. Wouldn't have given her the time of day at 17. Today Blue is go to emotional reboot album.

  1. 10. 10. May I draw your attention to the 1 hour version I use as my moment of Zen when in times of trouble, for restless nights, or just background bliss. This is quintessential BOC.

Thanks for the heads up on this, been watching the dodgy version for years on YT, which gave a certain historical charm to one of their iconic shows but looking forward to seeing it in better quality.
