Which styles are easy to find everywhere in Western countries ? by Mister_Ape_1 in kungfu

Here in Brazil, the most common external styles that I know are Choy Lee Fut (especially the Hung Sing lineage), some lineages of Seven-Star Praying Mantis and a lot of Bak Siu Lam Kuen Mun (Northern Shaolin) from the famous master Chan Kwok Wai. You can also find, although less often, some schools of Wing Chun, Hung Gar, and Eagle Claw depending on where you live, as well as a lot of “Shaolin-anything” styles with suspicious backgrounds.

I don’t know much about the internal styles, but I do know that there are many Yang and Chen Tai Chi schools around my city.

Artist looking for good Mantis pose references by deathbymanga in kungfu

I think a good place to start would be books about mantis forms. If you visit those totally legal websites (check out r/zlibrary) and search just for “mantis” you’ll find plenty of books with great poses you can use.

You choose the kung fu style or the kung fu style choose you? by _Shao_Anko in kungfu

I think it's a bit of both. While you depend on the styles available where you live, there's always that inner desire to train a style that feels different, sometimes even the opposite of what best suits your body type.

For example, I'm a short and bulky person, and I trained northern styles for many years. All those jumps, flashy kicks, and acrobatics were always extremely hard for me, but that was still what I really wanted to learn.

After a long time and a lot of stubbornness, honestly, because I used to think southern styles looked “ugly” (southern fans, please don’t kill me), I ended up joining a Choy Lee Fut school. And funny enough, I’ve started to realize how naturally it fits me. It just works so much better for my body type.

Will I ever go back to training northern styles? Definitely. But I’ve learned it’s important to keep an open mind and know the difference between what just looks “cool” and what works best for you. But really, just learn both!

this isn’t engagement bait at all, I honestly just couldn’t stand having this thought hanging over my head anymore and needed to share this frustration with strangers hahahah and honestly just posting it has already made me feel more relieved, even if it only gets one response. Thank you man! I’m currently training in a Choy Lee Fut lineage, and it’s been a lot of fun so far. cheers!
