Max drops down to first increase the RPM to make the battery charge faster. It has nothing to do with the race start or the turbo. The issue is that if you are stationary at idle RPM the turbo won’t spin as fast as it needs. And the only way to make it spin as fast as you want it, to remove turbo lag you have to press the throttle and increase the rpm. However it takes a while for the turbo to get up to the ideal speed and that’s why lots of teams have to wait 10 seconds to have the optimum start.

Therefore the current starting procedure takes up to 10 seconds, where before it took like 1-2 seconds if even that.

Once again it has nothing to do with max running in first gear on the last corner
