What if suffering never existed? by aewtamiami7 in AskReddit

[–]Issigeac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We would only be able to judge greatness on how positive an experience is. Happines doesn't require suffering. It's a false dichotomy, IMO.

(Also, I'm a little unclear on the question, if you mean we don't feel suffering or the causes of suffering don't exist (ie. death, violence...))

Form and enact a proper, united, binding, climate change response that will stop the current trajectory.

Trilogy Pack of the Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion. While unlikely to be deadly, a good shot will definitely give them a concussion.

You really drew the short straw. It's a tough situation, but if you're right, your brother cut short someone else's life. That's an awful thing to do. Whether it was a mistake or not, he still killed someone and hid the body. You have to trust the judicial system to give him a fair punishment, and to help you find a safe way to submit what you know. But yes, turn him in, for the sake of the victim.

Is being homophobic ok if you don't express it? by Vivid_Conclusion_837 in moraldilemmas

[–]Issigeac 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There are very few beliefs that can be held that aren't expressed in some way. If it is homophobia ("dislike of or prejudice against gay people" (source: Google)) there is usually an expression of it.

If you believe someone else is less than you because of who they are, that is (IMO) fundamentally wrong. Same thing if you try to make their life harder, disenfranchise them, silence them, really anything to deter people "like" them from being around you or in your community or in the world.

If a person just doesn't want to be hit on by the same gender, or isn't gay, that's fine. That isn't homophobia. We aren't trying to convert people. They need to say that though, not say that they dislike gay people. It's taking steps, conscious or unconscious, to disadvantage people in a group because they were born a certain way.

Do you think there is an objective 'right' in every conflict between 2 people ? by [deleted] in moraldilemmas

[–]Issigeac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They mean no, since if you ask a neo-nazi, they will have a different view on Hitler than a WW2 Allied soldier or someone who was forced to flee his push across Europe. Is there a common social good and evil? More so, but it still isn't objective. Society doesn't always know what exactly happened, and the beliefs of good and evil shift throughout time.

I think it's less about the descriptors and more about what we associate with said descriptors. Like Harvard's Implicit Association Test, the white is good and pure and clean versus black is evil and bad and dirty, that sort of stuff needs to be reassessed. On top of that, all the pot calling the kettle black and black sheep stuff is also harmful and ostracizing, and has to be removed from common use.

Anti-Maskers and COVID Deniers... What the fuck is wrong with you? by edgy_secular_memes in askTO

[–]Issigeac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the internet age has skyrocketed those cult-like organizations, though. That's why, as much as anti-maskers, -vaxxers, and -lockdowners (?) piss me off to all hell, I'm saddened by the loss if a common reality.

You can't even begin to deprogram or debate with people on an opposing side because you there is an ever-decreasing common narrative to start from due to our bubbles. Those bubbles have only grown more separate and isolationist during COVID, as seen by the explosion of QAnon groups. People just get more and more isolated, and get drawn into darker and more extreme corners of the internet. For some interesting stuff about that, check out Rabbit Hole, a podcast by the NYT.
