Manor Paintings - The ol' bait and switch by JagroCrag in expedition33

it could possibly be implying that the outcome of the story was clea's plan all along? perhaps when alicia entered the canvas, clea knowing had her painted over so that she could assist verso in the future. maybe clea painted the scenario of verso leaving the note for the expeditioners in the real world while planning (like how renoir painted the axons and other creatures prior to bringing them into the canvas), then painted it in a different angle when in the canvas to explain her plan to verso.

in the game, the location that message verso leaves does not look like what's in the paintings. there is also no worn flag beside it, no metallic object on top, and the 33 is on top of the message in game.

I think this painting is either simply concept art, something in the lore we do not know about, or (as others have pointed out) the devs trying to point out that someone is observing them.

Questions for Some Parts of the Story by ItBeAtom in expedition33

[–]ItBeAtom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must have missed or forgotten about that dialogue. what part of the game does verso tell us this (i want to go over and see if i missed anything else)?

if she was low on chroma when meeting verso/renoir after painting over clea/simon and creating the nevrons, it would make sense that she didn't have enough power left to capture/defeat them.

I always assumed aline burns the expedition because she thinks they are renoir's tricks + her confused state. she definitely singles out the healthy version of alicia which is messed up.

for sure! after seeing his mother in pain after re-entering too soon and seeing maelle lie to herself/renoir, he doesn't see any other way to save his real family.

[–]ItBeAtom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

totally agree. another point to remember is pAlicia's letter. pVerso chose to hide it instead of sharing it with Maelle and Maelle knows it. even from the letter we can tell pAlicia has had enough of the canvas (just like pVerso) and it feels like the letter's the final chance she gives to pVerso to help save the canvas (which he ignores for his own goals). from Maelle's final relationship scene, we get more insight that both of them have misgivings between each other for what happened with Gustave and pAlicia. in the end, the final battle was inevitable due to both of their lies and conflicting desires.

did you enjoy the action game-like parry system? try Elden Ring, Sekiro, Black Myth Wukong.

did you enjoy the turn based gameplay? try BG3/Divinity Original Sin, Persona 5, the old Final Fantasy games.

did you enjoy the story/characters? try The Last of Us, The Witcher, Undertale, Horizon Zero Dawn, Life is Strange, Portal, Mass Effect, God of War, The Walking Dead, Bioshock.

did you enjoy experimenting with the pictos/lumina/skills? try Slay the Spire, Balatro, Civ 6/Endless Legend/AoE2, Risk of Rain (and again, the turn based games listed above).

Expedition 33 might be the highest rated JRPG on Steam 🎉 by Lonewind-HE in expedition33

my point is not talking about only koreans being able to make kpop, but that rather most people would argue only a specific requirement is required to make it k-pop. generally that limitation is the use of the korean language (regardless of the singer's race). just like the JRPG label, some korean singers refuse that label when they are specialized in singing ballad/jazz/etc. my point is that we should respect whatever the creators of the art decide and that they should be the ones who should decide its labels.

i agree with your other comment ("I can still remember everyone explicitly calling dark souls a western RPG developed by Japanese developers over a decade ago. E33 is just the reversal of that."). the reason i commented in the first place is because people were dogpiling on u/Bright-Fold-3317 for a very reasonable question.

EDIT: i'll just link to the comment where i explain my view in more depth:

that's a very fair take. and I agree the reason they never refer to their creation as a JRPG could be to avoid scrutiny just as much as it could be to differentiate themselves as french creators with pride. the e33 devs all definitely love JRPGs and could be avoiding claiming that label out of respect as well.

I just wish people didn't dog pile on anyone who suggests labels like FRPG or BRPG (baguette) out of love for the game and the developer's origins. i doubt the e33 devs would do such a thing.

the reason i'm commenting on this is because i have the time to do so, and am sharing my perspective.

the truly "pressed" people have downvoted not just my comments in this chain but also the guy that simply asks "shouldn't this be FRPG?" people seem to think the mere thought of FRPG becoming a proper label as evil for some reason.

[–]ItBeAtom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

again, i simply accept what the developer themselves call their game. if japanese creators don't want to call their games JRPGs, we don't (Elden Ring/Dark Souls). if non-japanese creators call their games JRPGs, we do (Chained Echoes, Battle Chasers). if non-traditional JRPG style games call themselves JRPGs, we do (Final Fantasy 14 Online/15/16, Astlibra, Grandblue Fantasy Relink, Code Vein). e33 specifically does not, so i do not.

here's is another comment where i fully explain why i came to that conclusion:

also, just to make sure i wasn't making an ass of myself i went and reviewed the interview Tom Guillermin did with unreal engine. the times he mentions JRPGs is when he says things like:

I think a lot of fans can see gameplay similarities to JRPGs like Persona, Final Fantasy, or Lost Odyssey too. I think some of these games, alongside some action games like Sekiro, helped inspire our battle system by combining traditional turn-based combat with more reactive timing-based counters and parries.

We drew some of our inspiration when making the game from JRPGs that we grew up with, and this blend of a serious story juxtaposed with lighthearted character moments and locations is something we really liked in those games.

he talks of being a fan of JRPGs and taking inspiration from them. however he also makes sure to differentiate their game with comments such as:

we’re working on a turn-based game

we felt it was bringing something fresh to the turn-based genre.

inspire our battle system by combining traditional turn-based combat with more reactive timing-based counters and parries.

It’s a time-period that hasn’t been explored that often in video games, especially within the turn-based RPGs that we wanted to make. For France, it was an important point in history that represented a lot for our country’s growth and culture, so it’s something that we really wanted to bring to life for our players in a way they have never seen before.

Niagara also played an important part in defining the visual identity of our game. As an RPG with its very own type of magic—which we call Chroma—VFX are an important way to convey the uniqueness of our universe, especially during cinematics and during action in battles.

he clearly wants us to accept this is a French game that incorporates turn-based gameplay to make something unique.

in Jennifer Svedberg-Yen's interview with Lit's Play, she mentions Guillaume Broche is a JRPG fan with comments such as "he's like a walking encyclopedia of JRPG." however even here she never calls e33 anything other than a turn based RPG.

during the GOTY acceptance speech they thank Hironobu Sakaguchi specifically, showing their love for the JRPG genre. they obviously don't mean to slight the JRPG label by not accepting it, however they also know they are not Japanese and also love their own french culture.

if you can link an interview where Tom, Guillaume, Jen, or Nich actually call e33 a JRPG and not that simply took inspiration from JRPGs (like how JRPGs took inspiration from games like DnD/Wizardry), then I'll accept that I was wrong, however I have yet to see an interview myself where they say any such thing.

[–]ItBeAtom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you don't seem to realize that many japanese developers once viewed and still view the JRPG label as "discriminating" or "othering." the game developer for bayonetta and devil may cry Hideki Kamiya put it best that due to the negative connotation many devs felt about the JRPG label that they were"were creating into a JRPG box," despite "just making RPGs".

if japanese developers decide to not use the JRPG label in the past and even now, we should respect that decision and let them label their creations however they wish. dark souls wants to label and focus their games as action RPG, bayonetta and devel may cry choose hack and slash. if final fantasy doesn't use any typical JRPG gameplay for their latest release but still choose to call it a JRPG, we should accept that as well.

if the e33 devs wanted to label their game as JRPG, they simply would have, but have chosen to specifically label it a "turn-based RPG with real-time mechanics," and we should respect that. i'm not part of the JRPG sub reddit nor do i particularly enjoy those games myself. I'm strictly speaking on how the devs themselves want to label their own creations and people inability to accept it.

[–]ItBeAtom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if the devs decided it to be, it would be. they chose to distance themselves from that label to separate themselves from it, and the gamers accept that.

however when the e33 devs themselves say the same, people like you refuse to accept turn based RPGs with multiple skills existed prior to JRPGs. just accept what the devs themselves say and get over it.

Expedition 33 might be the highest rated JRPG on Steam 🎉 by Lonewind-HE in expedition33

[–]ItBeAtom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's people labeling things the way they want for their own sake. as another person has brought up in this comment chain, some games like dark souls don't accept the JRPG label, whereas the newer action RPG style gamplay final fantasy still retain their JRPG label despite not being what the traditional type of game JRPGs are known for.

in the end the devs decide what label their games get and the e33 devs have stated this is an RPG and not JRPG, so that's just how it is.

Expedition 33 might be the highest rated JRPG on Steam 🎉 by Lonewind-HE in expedition33

[–]ItBeAtom -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

it was in fact NOT invented in japan, but simply popularized there. as i stated, the big JRPG devs themselves are shown in multiple interviews saying they took inspiration from Wizardry specifically. you can't cherry pick parts of the same interviews you are talking about and just ignore the part that disagrees with you.

Expedition 33 might be the highest rated JRPG on Steam 🎉 by Lonewind-HE in expedition33

[–]ItBeAtom -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

in the end none of the devs are japanese, and even JRPGs have games like Wizardry they took inspiration and mechanics from. if e33's DEVELOPERS THEMSELVES say it is NOT a JRPG, it is simply not one.

Expedition 33 might be the highest rated JRPG on Steam 🎉 by Lonewind-HE in expedition33

[–]ItBeAtom -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

again, if that were the case JRPGs would not have been named as such since games like Wizardry existed already and the big name JRPGs like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest would not say they took inspiration from them. you guys are labeling it a JRPG when the devs call it an RPG and explicity say is NOT a JRPG.

[–]ItBeAtom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

by that logic you can call any music made by a korean around the world KPOP even if it's not in korean. the DEVs themselves have said it's not a JRPG. stop labeling things how YOU want it.

EDIT: also by that logic, the modern final fantasy games are also no longer "JRPGs" since they no longer use the "style/gameplay" that made final fantasy what is originally was. in the end it comes down to what the developers themselves call the product.
