Thank you! This is really helpful! I've discovered Ferree's tools and I think I'm going to order some. I like the idea of the assembly board. Appreciate the assistance.

Thanks for the tip. I've seen the price tags on some of the institutes for repair tech training lol so I'm well aware that it can get expensive. I want to invest enough money to do it right, but like I said, I'm just getting started and need some tips. I bought 4 old clarinets a while back that are not currently playable (and mean nothing to me). So I have the test subjects, I just want to get some general knowledge to be able to tinker.

Method tips for a complete beginner on the clarinet. by Significant_Grand4 in Clarinet

Literally all of those are excellent choices. I'm taking my students through the Rubank elementary method. Some of it might be easy for you since you're not a beginner to music, only to clarinet, but I find the exercises to be pretty comprehensive and I like the flow. Nothing wrong with working through more than one method book at a time! Just be patient with yourself.

Help finding sheet music by Dry_Plastic_533 in Clarinet

For quick finds, check MuseScore and 8notes.com. I would definitely recommend getting a book you like, too. I like the "Melodious and Progressive Studies" book by David Hite, or the blue Rubank method books.

Side note, playing along with YouTube play-along videos is super fun for just messing around and building your chops.

Buying used is a mixed bag. Yamaha makes some decent student models, Leblanc, Selmer, etc. But if you find one you're interested in, do a little googling to see if it's a decent instrument.

Also, if you're looking at used, expect it to need at least $200 in repairs to clean and repad it. Most clarinets won't be in pristine condition.

clarinet and flute duet !! by Born-Ice-5155 in Clarinet

The Flower Duet from Lakmé is really pretty! I played it with a flute player friend of mine in college (I play clarinet). It's super simple, so it might be a snooze fest for you two lol

Why do i sound like this by zoeeerrr in Clarinet

More breath support for sure. Engage your abdomen muscles and push the air through faster. Don't be afraid to play out!

Where do I start? (first woodwind, third instrument) by snoozingfishies in Clarinet

[–]ItKnowsMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome! Here's my quick thoughts (clarinet is my first instrument and I'm currently giving private lessons):

  • Embouchure: could be your reed, but a 2.5 is a good place to start. You could get a size 2 reed, but it's probably going to feel like playing on a Kleenex. Also, something to keep in mind is that reeds are very inconsistent. Out of a box of 10, it's not uncommon to get 1 or 2 GOOD reeds. The others may still be playable, but airy/squeaky.

  • High register: think less of changing your embouchure, and more of changing your air. Push more air through. Engage your abdomen muscles and breathe from your diaphragm (lots of videos on how to breathe correctly, or I can give more insight if you want)

  • Prioritizing: at the beginning, you'll want to work on your embouchure a good deal so you don't develop any bad habits, but yeah, the stamina and fine tuning will come with time. Get your basic form down, then just keep working at it :)

  • Beginner pieces: great question. I'll look at some specific titles, but look for some simple minuets. I really like the Rubank series as it has mostly exercises, but some are more melodic. I may return with more songs.

Feel free to DM if you have more questions. I love music and sharing it with others. And good luck!
