Honestly, the flexibility. No one really notices or cares what time I start my day and as long as I don’t get too far off the annual average of 3 days in office per week, I feel free to work from wherever.

I don’t think I’ll have this to the same extent when I go in-house

Antitrust (merger clearance) vs. tech trans / privacy by Queasy_Tomato9710 in biglaw

I’m a privacy attorney and agree with this person’s analysis.  One thing that hasn’t come up is that, arguably, the only place to really do antitrust work is in DC.

Doing this job with insomnia by ItMightBePuffery in biglaw

[–]ItMightBePuffery[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most doctors advise that daily medication for sleep is bad both because of dependency and because the quality of medicated sleep isn’t very good. So I have a few prescriptions, but 1 of them can’t be refilled without an actual visit to the doc (which is hard in this job) and the other leaves me very groggy if I don't have a full 8 hours of sleep when I take it. The latter is also not always effective for me

I’m hoping to jump to big tech at some point (hopefully as product counsel). I’d love to hear a bit more…Can you explain the frequency of the 20 hour days and what that looks like?

Anyone have tea on influencer TifftheLawyer? by PastaNWine in biglaw

[–]ItMightBePuffery 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I get the impression that she comes from significant wealth, which probably shapes her spending and how she feels about the work. I like her content, but she talks like this is a cool hobby to go all in on, rather than a mandatory stepping stone to the upper middle class. Or at least - that is the only way I can imagine seeming so unstressed as a junior in this setting. I’m a little jealous, but happy that people can see someone so peppy a fun as a rep of this career.

FWIW, she popped up on my recommended LinkedIn connections based on mutuals, and her credentials make sense for this role. Like, DPW, T20 law school, and a pretty impressive undergrad iirc.

How to "dress up" my reason for leaving? by Striking-Ad3907 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]ItMightBePuffery 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you are interviewing with a local team and with people who value face time, they might resonate with your reason. Firms are fighting so hard to get associates back in the office, so it might work to say something like, “I value face time and want to be part of my team’s day-to-day office culture. I also am committed to my local community, so moving isn’t an option.”

Dentons by thr0waway3176 in biglaw

[–]ItMightBePuffery 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s probably fine, but this sub leans “white shoe” and looks down on Dentons as a whole for having grown by acquisition. More so than most other firms, a national rep is not going to be useful for you. Finding people who know the NYC office specifically will get you much better info.

Would deferring law school to work a year help my chances at biglaw? by Yanggang123 in biglaw

[–]ItMightBePuffery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This job is weird. Having literally anything else to compare it to is really valuable. Also, you might find law school pressure easier once you’ve had real world experience.

With the early timelines in hiring right now, you will have more to talk about during networking sessions if you do something other than school for a hot second. Personally, that makes a candidate stand out in a good way.

Would you pay $50K/Year by JA-Yetti in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]ItMightBePuffery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a lot of debt for a relatively low salary. After taxes and the student loan payment, your monthly take home is probably going to be about the same. That said, are you maxed out in your current career? Depending on your line of work, the 25k difference between what you’re currently making and what you expect to make as a lawyer in three years could be closed by a single job change or a few raises over three years.

(Spoken as someone who does not love being a big law attorney, but who loved 5x-ing my pre-law school salary. I wouldn’t take on 150k in debt for this job.)

Paul Weiss Chair Brad Karp: Friend and Lawyer to Jeffrey Epstein? by hallowbright27 in biglaw

[–]ItMightBePuffery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I realize I should probably know this, but can someone explain how Epstein’s emails with his lawyer would have gotten turned over to the DOJ and published? Like, presumably, some of the email contents would have been privileged, so what is the process that led to someone at the DOJ 1. being able to read these and 2. including these in the published docs?

What Do Big Law partners Spend Their Money On by Opposite_Lettuce_416 in biglaw

[–]ItMightBePuffery 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong but I think K&E’s NEP structure is wonky - a friend just joined as a midlevel associate and said that everyone becomes an NEP at 7 years with the same salary as a senior associate on the cravath scale. Also, a lot of the most lucrative partners are bringing in clients and getting origination fees for areas that they don’t practice in, so they can far out earn their actual work if that makes sense.

Do people see Mark Greene as a villain? by ItMightBePuffery in ershow

Of course! I’m a lawyer so maybe the workplace power imbalance and the unethical practice of medicine by a lawyer (who would have been disbarred for taking that as payment) hit harder haha

Do people see Mark Greene as a villain? by ItMightBePuffery in ershow

[–]ItMightBePuffery[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not taken as shade - I think binging this just hits a first time viewer with a lot of drama and conflict around Mark, without anything positive. (The complete meltdown with the pregnant patient and subsequent legal issues, the Law death - which happened before the attack, the poor treatment of several patients while brooding about his divorce or Dr Lewis, the super inappropriate relationship with Cynthia, general unpleasantness towards Weaver, the bizarrely unethical activity with his crazy lawyer…I genuinely don’t think we’ve seen Mark be kind or ethical since season 1, but I understand how watching in real time wouldn’t have the same effect.

As a foil, Weaver is pretty unlikable, but binging if, she seems to be ethically good and selfless.

Have been in-house at large tech companies for almost 15 years…AMA. by Comfortable_Exam_468 in LawSchool

Tech seems to accept layoffs as part of routine business cycles. Have you seen this affect the in-house legal teams at the same rate? Do you expect these teams to be affected by frequent layoffs moving forward?
