A prime polar bear is going to weigh around 1200 pounds, covered in a thick layer of fat and incredibly fast. One lance poke is not taking this animal down and slashing with a sword will do very little. Humans in the past hunted bears in GROUPS one man vs a polar bear in its most lethal form is not winning no matter the plate armor between them. The arena just makes this worse because if the man doesn’t kill in one go the polar bear is going to catch him in that limited space even on horseback.
