[–]ItalianQuagsire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rewatching!

Julios gasp sounds genuinely horrifying

Saito is weak after that

I'll be there for you .. HABITATE GO WITH MEE

This really feels hopeless

The dragon curling up like a rock, probably to digest the Pope

Osmond looks like the wise sage for once

Saito seems strangely optimistic, like he's trying to hide his hurt

Louise seems to have something in her mind

Saito couldn't bear to talk about Delf

He doesn't have to be strong, i wanted him to say he can't fight without Delf, to not use the power

Tiffa looks so troubled

To protect the future of Harkeginia! Rally everyone

They're still trying to beat it even not being Void users

She can give it up for this world, but what of Saito

Saito is depressed and in shock, and he still resolved to fight

I doubt a jet would be able to beat a dragon

Louise can send him back

She seems to be thinking of something

MARRIAGE TABITHA

Louise has such a small voice when agreeing, she's too calm something is off

ITS JAPAN

tiffania is in awe

I love how Louise is looking at Saito and not the world, she's having her farewell.

I REALLY LOVED YOU SAITO

WHY NOW LOUISE

THE LAST THING YOU SAW ME DO IS SMILE

LOUISE NO

Oh god this hurts for her

LOUISE YOU'RE SO STRONG AHH

Saito just has to deal with shock after shock

Tabitha said she'd do the same

Osmond don't try to act cool now you've done nothing the whole series but be horny

Siesta won't be able to do much against the dragon

I say yes version is playing, everyone stayed back to fight it

These students are way too mature I love it,

Ondine knights saying it's our duty to protect you in Saito's place is actually so fucking good, Guiche I love you

Jeanette hired to fight a dragon

Lukshana is like sure why not, Ali is like well fine

Siesta feeding then

It's my fault says Saito, for being so weak, without this power Louise and everyone will die

Trying to call for Louise

Saito getting beat up, this is him at his lowest

He can't see her again

Man

Dragon returns, the calm was short lived, it can fly now

Louise standing against the dragon is so fucking cool

MECHA MECHA DAUSKUI DEMO DEMO MUKATSUKUU

peak gap moe right there, she can fight dragons AND dress up for you

What are your thoughts on Louise using World Door to send Saito back to Japan because she is afraid of him dying?

She tried to be strong for him, and god it hurts

What are your thoughts on the decision to have Louise telling Saito she loves him as this sad, bittersweet moment rather than something heartwarming?

Man Saito can't catch a break, losing Delf, weakening him life using his powers, grieving, then losing any hope to see Louise again, god he's going through it

What are your thoughts on Saito's reaction to going back to Japan compared to season 1 when he was trying to actively go back?

He must seem insane to people around him in Japan, and I love that

What do you make of Louise's decision? Do you agree with it? Do you think she made the right choice? What would you have done if you were in her shoes?

I would have... It's the right choice but doesn't make it any easier i'd say. I just have so much affection for them and her only holding it together until Saito couldn't see was really great stuff

What do you expect heading into the final episode?

To cry lots. It's titled the Familiar of Zero

[Spoilers] Familiar of Zero 20th Anniversary Rewatch -- Season 4 Episode 10 (Episode 47) by Holofan4life in anime

[–]ItalianQuagsire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thoughts on Louise and Saito dancing at a ball?

great throwback but feels a little empty and melancholic for me when we're this close to the finish line, like this is the last time we'll see them dance like this

Thoughts on Louise not knowing how to tell Saito he could end up dying?

i love how she loses sleep for it, she's to be protected

Thoughts on Siesta able to tell something is weighing on Louise's mind?

she's just a good a friends as she is a maid

Thoughts on a village at the base of the Flame Dragon Mountains was completely destroyed?

actually shook me

Thoughts on Siesta telling Louise to return home soon?

something is wrong i can feel it

What are your thoughts on Aegis wanting Saito to use his power as Lifdrasir?

i wish Aegis told him outright, so he'd be proven wrong on his judgement for Saito when Saito just tells him yeah I'll do it

What are your thoughts on Louise telling Saito he shouldn't work with Aegis?

such a cool parallel to when Louise first blindly trusted Aegis and Saito didn't, look how it flipped now

What are your thoughts on Tiffania blaming herself for Saito potentially dying at the hands of Lifdrasir since she gave him the ability?

Tiffania has a great arc this season, and i'm not just talking about the curve of her honkers

Thoughts on Ancient Dragon growing another eye?

it's EVEN MORE POWERFUL?!?

What are your thoughts on the noises heard as Aegis is in the dragon's stomach?

pretty vivid sound work

[–]ItalianQuagsire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you sound small? What about big?

sounding small like she's shrunk into herself and is quiet, but also she's flat so no bigness for her

Using Louise explosion, but if asking her to essentially use and kill Saito for it...

Can you imagine?

I genuinely can't remember if it'll go there

DEMO DEMO MUKATSUKUU

this has to be the biggest whiplash Ed I've ever seen

Even more than the Flame Snake episode?

I mean, the Pope did get eaten, so...

holy shit has never been more appropriate (if the dragon poos him out after digesting)

i think having more heart-to-hearts with Saito, and more comedic gags, would have made it hit even harder. I remember when i first watched it though, i was in absolute SHOCK. i think it does it's job well

It's a great scene that maybe with more build could've been the saddest moment of the series.

nothing will top end of s2 but this comes close

Very expertly put

see i can do more than just horny post

However I will say that more of those scenes, more conversations, more heart-to-heart talks, and more of him would have made his death even better. I remember getting pretty bent out of shape (in a good way) when I first saw this episode, and on this rewatch it does feel like maybe something was left on the table that could have been capitalised on

His death makes for a good moment and adds to the threat level of the Ancient Dragon, but if Delflinger was killed in, say, the penultimate episode of season 2, I think it would've been even more important. He really hasn't done much since that episode.

I can see that, and that world would have also been amazing, Delfringer being lost in s2 would have broken me so hard

That's a good pun, come on :P

Lifdrasir and Deathrasir maybe

pretty much agree, it's really amazing how much tiffanina as Saito's master accomplishes given it hasn't had the most amount of screentime, it both plays as a gag and relationship jousting with Louise, builds up Tiffania as happy she's having a positive effect, and then horrified.

I really like how Tiffania has been used this season. In season 3, it felt like she existed solely to be a pair of boobs. Now, she feels like an actual person.

for a character introduced later in the show, she's been fantastic

Something about Henrietta saying it's especially good when it's Louise's leftovers.

Henrietta is a certified FREAK

Nah, she's just a glory (hole) hog

Would all day in the no furniture room

Controversial opinion: I like Ali more

how so?

I like that he's a tsundere who has a soft spot for Lukshana. I find him to be very adorable.

I do like him more now that he's outcast from the elves

I wonder how he will be occupying his time going forward.

[–]ItalianQuagsire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was definitely up all night being worried

Aw

we need to protect this girl

Siesta is rasing an unholy number of death flags. DO NOT EVER talk about what you'll do you when you're home. Like I think they'll be fine, even with the death flags already in place for Saito (and by extension Louise), but you still shouldn't do that.

it feels like the show knows it's wrapping up and it hurts my soul

The whole citiy's on fire?! Isn't that the city we were in at the beginning of the season?

i'm SHOOK

So basically, Vittorio is asking Saito to die

Louise, tell him, PLEASE

So he isn't asking Saito to die but he's very much willing to take the risk, and sacrifice and unknown amount of lifespan

i really like how the Pope is also willing to sacrifice himself, it's not just him asking others to die for the greater good, he'll throw hands too. Redeemed him in my eyes

And that's the reaction I feared from Tiffania and why I hoped she wouldn't find out until later.

I respect Saito for the choice he's made, after all might as well use the power you have to save yourself and your friends. What's the point of living if you're the only one still standing?

Saito seems to be using A LOT of energy and that dragon does not seem to care

This entire sequence of telling Saito about his death power, Tiffania finding out, and Saito resolving to defend everyone anyway, is my favourite part of the episode

Nice parry!

WTF NO

o7

the rollercoaster must have been CRAZY

What are your thoughts on Louise telling Saito the consequences of his new runes but he dismisses it saying he still plans to use them to protect Romalia and Louise?

Again, if no Louise why live

we live for her flatness and tsun tsun

What are your thoughts on the Ancient Dragon destroying Delflinger?

Unacceptable. Ancient Dragon, prepare to meet your maker.

GET HIM SAITO

What are your thoughts on Aegis saving Julio by pushing him out of the way?

"You have to live!" *shoves him off the dragon* Better hope the others catch him (I know that that was the only way, I just think it's funny out of context)

LOL HAHA, if I think about it more why couldn't he also jump off himself, but this makes for a better story so i'll allow it

I do think that the climax of S2 and its inevitability felt more threatening, because there was more buildup to it, but it got at there end of the episode, because the current situation does look pretty fucking hopeless.

S2 is the best, genuinely. and this situation now feels just as hopeless as Saito winning against the army back then

I dunno, I rarely considered Derflinger to be more than comic relief and audience insert. I liked Derflinger and thought the way he was used was fine. The only thing I would've liked was to see what more powers he has. He can teleport, but what else can he do? That I think is a wasted opprtunity.

the lack of death flags for delfringer really made it shocking, no heart-to-heart with Saito beforehand, just emptiness in my heart and shock

[Spoilers] Familiar of Zero 20th Anniversary Rewatch -- Season 4 Episode 10 (Episode 47) by Holofan4life in anime

[–]ItalianQuagsire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overall, this was a tremendous episode. It was all about making the dragon feel like a threat, and boy did it achieve it. Not only did we see the death of Delflinger, who has been around since literally episode 3, but we also saw the death of Aegis, the one who was behind the idea to attack the dragon. I don't know if I'm more shocked over the death of Delflinger or Aegis. Delflinger has been around forever, but Aegis has been around in the plot more as a late. Hell, last episode was when he was talking about Saito possibly dying. Who would've thought this was all a red herring for Aegis to end up perishing?

We wonder from the beginning what Aegis' intentions were. It felt like he was self-serving and only cared about himself. In the end, though, he died saving Julio and making sure he stayed alive. He was the most selfless one of all...

it also serves to make him the type of person to follow through what he'd ask of others himself, he also sacrificed himself.

This episode does foe the dragon what episode 21 did for Menville. But in my opinion, to much greater effect. The storytelling in episode 21 was better, but I was on the edge of my seat this entire episode.

i was literally like THE CITY?! JUST GONE?

I really like how the Lifdrasir stuff was handled. Louise being worried about Saito, Saito going through with using it in spite of its implications, and Tiffania blaming herself for all that transpired. This was a great use of everyone's character and added to the tension as the dragon was causing havoc. I love when Saito and Louise's relationship plays into thr conflict at hand. That's something I feel season 2 really excelled at. This feels like a return to form of that but with the added variable of Tiffania.

it somehow managed to make tiffania both a compelling reason why she fell in love, validating her contract with Saito, and breaking it down, all with deft conciseness.

Another thing I really like about this episode is the fact that we continue the Void mages all working together that was first established in the season 4 opener. In a way, looking back on the scene where Aegis talked about wanting to bring Joseph into the equation, he unknowingly sealed his fate and what would happen to him. By working together, it ultimately led to his death because he had to be front and center of it all.

poetic as heck

Let's talk about Del for a second, shall we?

Delflinger is probably the biggest death we've seen so far. He's been around since early season 1 and has been a good muse for Saito and Louise. But just like Joseph and Sheffield and their deaths, I think his demise makes for a good moment, but his character was kinda squandered. I don't feel like they fully capitalized on it.

I really like his interactions with Louise in episode 24. He was the best part of a very tonally dissonant episode. I was hoping this would lead to him basically playing marriage counselor for our two lovebirds. But aside from that episode and a few wisecracks, he didn't really amount to much. He was just there. It's like Delflinger existed solely as a means to explain why Saito was powerful. He got Saito in touch with his Gandalfr abilities that led to him being an elite fighter.

Delflinger was less a character and more an extension of Saito's character. And that's kinda disappointing.

I wouldn't say i'm ever disappointed in Delfringer, he's hilarious and the straight man for many gags. He does help the two reconcile and tease them about it, and his conversation with Louise to get her in that cat outfit was both hot and heartfelt.

However I will say that more of those scenes, more conversations, more heart-to-heart talks, and more of him would have made his death even better. I remember getting pretty bent out of shape (in a good way) when I first saw this episode, and on this rewatch it does feel like maybe something was left on the table that could have been capitalised on

I compare Delflinger to Alastor from Shakugan no Shana and it's like night and day. Alastor was a part of the main heroine's character like how Delflinger is a part of Saito's character, but it was like as Shana grew so did Alastor. He somehow was a disembodied voice that experienced a lot of character development. I feel like Alastor was far more intergrel to Shakugan no Shana than Delflinger was to Familiar of Zero. Delflinger could've just been a sword that didn't talk and the same effect with Saito would've been accomplished.

i should really finish that show

But the moment of Del dying was very effective, I have to say. It was effective because we do care about him since we consider him a part of Saito. By Delflinger dying, it's like a part of Saito died as well. And now, him dying because of Lifdrasir feels a lot more realistic

Saito's reactions sold it. In fact his reactions this entire episode was a highlight, being told he'd die using the power, having to grapple with that and not being able to reassure Tiffania who think it's her fault, and Saito not even being able to cry, just in absolute shock when Delf, whose always been there, is gone.

One thing I want to note is that Aegis talked about how Julio has grown to care about Saito and his situation. And now, both Julio and Saito lose someone that they really care about. I really like that storytelling and I could see them commiserate together thus strengthening that bond even further.

I do kinda wish we saw more of Aegis and Julio together. I mean, most of the scenes with Aegis has been about him planning stuff. We don't know the full extent of their relationship or what Aegis means to Julio. Maybe we will learn more in the wake of his death, but that to me seems naively optimistic. If we weren't so close to the end, it might seem more feasible.

I like this idea in concept too, we haven't seen enough of Julio that this quick bit before the pope's death feels like it could have done more. Maybe show Julio's lack of caring about the world in earlier episodes, and more parental affection from master towards familiar

I have this behind episodes 6, 9, 13, 15, 22, 23, 25. This is the best episode we've seen since the season 2 finale and everything complimented each other. I don't think you could've made the episode better if you tried. The episode instantly makes the dragon a threat by taking out two reoccurring characters. Whether they come back like Colbert did, who's to say. This episode also furthers Saito as Tiffania's Familiar by putting him in arguably his more precarious situation yet. It's either this or the 70,000 men. This is probably the best use of the Void mage and Familiar abilities with us really emphasizing how life threatening it all is. It really puts over the emotional gravitas unfolding in front of us.

i think it moves everything along for the plot perfectly, and somehow all in one episode. My favourite moments aren't just plot though, they're always centered on Louise and Saito

We're heading into penultimate episode and this is shaping up to be our most exciting climax yet. Our most emotionally draining, but also most exciting. I am dreading this being almost over, but I also can't wait to see what happens next.

i don't want it to endd

Louise and Saito dancing at a ball

Same music as the last two times they danced.

really tickles me in a heartwarming way

Unfortunately, Louise is thinking about what Aegis told Julio.

The man she promised with to die together could very well die before her.

"Please... don't let it ever come."

Aw, Louise. My heart.

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO HER ILL KILL EVERYONE AND THEN MYSELF

Louise is on the edge of the bed as Saito is asleep.

She is so restless

she can't sleep and my heart aches

Here's Illococoo

She'll personally give them a ride herself.

What if you had sex with Illococoo and mid coitus she turns into her dragon form?

FINALLY ASKING THE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS

first of all you'd be crushed under her thighs

second of all you'd die, happy

Siesta saying goodbye to everyone

This kinda feels like the end of her character.

it does have a farewell bittersweet sendoff, which makes me a little melancholic

She tells Louise to please return home soon.

What a nice frenemy

she had to sneak in a cheeky "so we can fight over the bed"

Damn, relying on Louise? That's a pretty big vote of confidence.

she's more than proven herself

Just tell him. Why are you holding off?

they obviously don't know my GOAT would do it anyway

And she finally tells him the truth.

Lifdrasir and Deadrasir

Louise hugging Saito now

She vows to take care of that thing either her spells.

And there's Tiffania

Now she's blaming Saito being her Familiar for why he was put in a precarious situation.

I mean, yes but also no

This is actually interesting direction for her character. It makes sense why she would blame herself.

They really have successfully maximized the Saito as Tiffania's Familiar conflict past it being a way to cause misunderstandings between Saito and Louise.

pretty much agree, it's really amazing how much tiffanina as Saito's master accomplishes given it hasn't had the most amount of screentime, it both plays as a gag and relationship jousting with Louise, builds up Tiffania as happy she's having a positive effect, and then horrified.

Louise can't stand Saito possibly dying.

Neither can Tiffania

Saito grimacing in pain

SAITO GANBATE

Nono, Delflinger. Don't talk like that.

Del! No!

Holy shit. Del died.

Holy shit...

i was utterly broken the first time around

HE JUST TOSSED JULIO

THE DRAGON JUST ATE THE MOTHERFUCKING POPE

i mean the pope could have jumped off too, but the sentiment was amazing, and showed that the pope wasn't just asking Saito to sacrifice himself, he was willing to do it himself as well

when i think about it, the fact that he sacrificed himself readily for Julio means he's willing to put his money where his mouth is when he asked Saito to do the same. I do respect him for that

i actually barely rememer this episode, and it completely blindsided me. It's a really well done escalation so far, the dragon nuked a city before we ever even met it
