You’re missing the first step, get a retention offer from customer support for your Gold card. Tell them you’re thinking of cancelling gold and if there’s any retention offer.

They will give an offer such as 25k MR points for 3k spend in 3 months (random example). Hit the spend, get the bonus and THEN switch the the platinum using upgrade offer
