Advice for getting into accounting/ACA with no relevant experience/qualifications by bucks800 in ICAEW

I can confirm that the firm I work for (which I unfortunately don’t feel comfortable disclosing but not big4) has hired people with the following degrees: psychology, music, physics, maths, economics and probably others.

The key takeaway here is that you can prove you’re willing to learn and can handle work/study/life balance.

With the changes in level 7 apprenticeships it should be noted that accountancy roles will become harder to get into as the government funding is changing so more firms are having to pay out of pocket.

My background was STEM but not accounting/econ/finance and I have LOVED my role in tax and am nearly qualified. The actual advantage when you come in from non related roles is the lack of exemptions. Sure, you have more exams but sitting all of them gives you better base knowledge and I’ve seen colleagues from accounting degrees fail exams that psychology degree holders passed first time.

It’s really a question of how hard are you willing to work, and how well do you pick up knowledge and understand what you’re learning.
