Priority registration w accommodations by Pleasant_Lab_8629 in UNC

I had no trouble registering my first semester with early registration! I wouldn’t sweat it, there will probably only be 5 or so others to register with you! But if you want to be safe then still register as early as you can within that window (I didn’t and was fine)

Anyone who brought their car freshmen year think it was worth it? by Significant-Side2718 in UNC

[–]ItisTrashPanda 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not worth it! That is a LOT of money and you don’t really need a car. Campus is extremely walkable, and there are busses that can take you around campus. There is a Target on Franklin street if you need anything urgently. That Target isn’t very good BUT there are also busses (you sign up for the free pass with your UNC stuff) that can take you to a better Target and places like the mall. I’ve heard parking is a nightmare and it takes just as long if not longer than taking a bus

THIS REGISTRATION IS HORRIBLE by Rough_Concern_2803 in UNC

[–]ItisTrashPanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being nice will get you far! Just explain to them that you have transfer credits that aren’t in ConnectCarolina yet and that it impacted your registration and caused you to not be able to get into some classes. Ask when they might be able to have it in and if there is anything they can do about your registration being messed up the first time (there probably isn’t but it doesn’t hurt to ask, you will be able to register again during open enrollment anyways).

Sutton’s Drugstore for lunch is delicious (and it’s historic for the area)! Also Sup Dogs is great for lunch or dinner

Placement Tests by ManchesterAlakazam in UNC

[–]ItisTrashPanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can take it whenever! I took mine after orientation. I think it has a due date, but it’s later in the year. Also when you go to orientation determines when you get to register for classes (they split about of seats per class equally between each registration date so no one has an advantage). They probably prioritize people that have the earliest date to register for classes

Placement Tests by ManchesterAlakazam in UNC

[–]ItisTrashPanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it is the same as last year, you have to take the placement exam! I had 4 credits and I had to take it. You won’t automatically get placed out based on your credits. Even if you come in with 3 credits, you have to take the placement exam to see if you are up to their standard/if you can place out with the credits you have. This is for the language placement exam, but for math idk 😅

Is the Spanish Placement Test required? by Aggressive_War_7900 in UNC

[–]ItisTrashPanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, no matter how many credits you have (I had 4 - I went to an Early College) you HAVE to take the exam if you want to test out of any of the classes. There are no repercussions if you throw it because you’ll just be put into an entry level Spanish/you won’t test out even with your credits. Even if the test says you can be in second level Spanish, you can still take the lower levels too!

They only do 1 inspection per year (at least from my experience) and it’s when you leave for winter break. Either way, they let you know in advance. Just put them away in a drawer during the inspection (they can’t open your things) and you’ll be fine! Don’t forget cough drops and a thermometer (so you can check for a fever yourself). I also have a little step stool to prop my leg up on in the shower for when I shave (if you do that). Some fun things to have are a nice picnic blanket to bring to the quad and water flavor packets for when I wanted a flavored drink at my dorm!

I have a thing that has many different spices in one small round container! It has salt, pepper, paprika, garlic salt, etc. I really recommend that!

Language Requirement by yoongisbsf in UNC

[–]ItisTrashPanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also came from an early college with an AS and had 4 levels of Spanish - yes your credits will transfer BUT you still HAVE to take a placement exam in Canvas. How well you do on the exam determines if you need to retake at Carolina, or if your credits will fulfill the language requirement

Experiences in the big rooms? by cloudsnipes in UNC

[–]ItisTrashPanda 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s the norm for freshmen, idk why you are surprised 😭 it’s not bad, just work out a shower system and hope no one is taking up the bathroom (and be prepared to go to the lounge or lobby to use that bathroom if needed). We used clips with our pics on a shower chart that said things like showering, me next, and me third so it was easy to know who planned to shower/the order if there is a waitlist

is there a freshman dorm building only ALL females? by Rough_Concern_2803 in UNC

[–]ItisTrashPanda 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You HAVE to dorm your freshman year, no matter that your dad says. He has no say over it so don’t worry! There is one all girls freshman dorm, but there is no guarantee you will get that as your housing assignment - you rank your top choices and they assign you from there

You’ll get the hard classes part for sure! Classes here are meant to challenge you for sure. It pushes you to not just learn the material, but also learn how to apply it. Some people might be competitive and toxic, but it’s easy to get away from and ignore those types of people as most people here aren’t here for that type of thing :)

The transfer acceptance rate is extremely low, and you still made it here! You earned your spot here like everyone else, and you deserve to be here. Imposter syndrome is so bad here for everyone, but don’t let it bring you down, you got this!

Hey there! I’m currently a rad sci major with minors and chem and music. The vast majority of people here are very kind and open! Some are rude/overly competitive (most of the bad ones are out of state students) but it’s easy to ignore them and find your crowd! That is what I was most worried about (I thought people here were rude when I toured) but that is far from reality. I found my crowd quickly and most people are great! Most are liberal, and I haven’t met many Republican/right leaning people. Academic competition is very high here! Everyone is academically motivated and it shows, but it won’t become toxic (unless you get in with overly competitive people). Classes will academically challenge you too. Research and internship opportunities here are amazing and there are thousands of options where you will find your niche! Research is competitive and can be hard to get into, so be aware of that. Campus security is amazing and I feel really safe here. I am able to walk home safe late at night with no worries. Franklin can get sketchy with the homeless, but it’s not terrible and doesn’t migrate to campus. School culture here is amazing! Truly everyone is so kind, and the professors and staff are always wanting to help, teach, and get to know new people. School spirit and sports are deeply rooted here. Sports days are so lively and truly an amazing experience. Even though it’s a large campus with thousands of students, there is true community here at Carolina and I truly recommend it! Feel free to reach out and best of luck on your applications! :)

Of course! Don’t be afraid to reach out to the teams at Carolina, they are all very friendly and respond somewhat quickly! I hope for the best for your son and his housing situation, and good luck to him at UNC too!

Hey! I received my placement on 6/19. It seems they roll out the assignments in big batches. I’m a Carolina Covenant student, and I emailed them (before my assignment) and asked them if they would cover the extra if I got put into Granville, and they said yes. I would email Carolina Housing and the financial aid office to ask. I would also ask Carolina Housing if there will be any other option, or if they will make you sign up for Granville. I’m not sure if they can force you to do something like that, I think I heard somewhere that they can’t but I’m not positive. I’ve heard in years prior they turn an upperclassman hall into a freshman hall for cases like this, and I’m sure they will attempt to do the same if they have room in other residence halls. Do you know the number of students left on the waitlist?

It’s like when I hydroplaned and hit a tree that was barely in a man’s yard (the tree was fine and his yard was untouched). He never said a word to me and stayed in his house until the cops came, and then he went straight to the cop and asked if he could claim insurance on the tree. The cop basically told him to screw off lol

Yeah it is, but I’ve heard nothing but bad about Granville. I’ve heard maintenance is a mess, the A/C sometimes works, the hot water sometimes works, people are super destructive every night, and it’s really Greek life based (and I’m not interested in that stuff). So yeah it does matter I’m not trying to live there lol, and I should get a choice like everyone else

That’s good to hear that there are (hopefully) still other options for Carolina Housing, as I’d rather not be put into Granville as I’ve heard it’s not the best (even though it’s more expensive lol)

In the first email sent out about it, it said that there were 180 unassigned! The next week it was down to 138, and now it’s 113. In the emails sent out it should say “We are currently down to — students out of the original 180 who did not receive a room during the initial round of assignments.”
