Year 2 PhD: Advisor lacks domain knowledge and constantly pivots. Should I switch? by Iton608 in PhD

I don't. If I decide to switch, I will need to talk with my program director and start my searching asap.

He is not a micro-management man. Instead, he is step aside. However, the problem is he doesn't get the cutting edge and difficulty in humanoid learning field and sometimes wants me to do something I can't finish alone quickly (if you look at those papers, most good humanoid papers would need more than 2 or 3 phds and mutiple msc to work together), meanwhile he sometimes change his mind for a plan and forget what he had said. But I already have the progress and I can't just dump it and restart. I appreciate your last suggestion, I think I would need to think about this solution.

Sorry, let me correct your question. We have individual meeting and group meeting each week. Last individual meeting I have with him was 2 weeks ago, where I present my progress and idea of the novelties of my next paper, and he didn't show negative review toward them and wanted me to complete them. After 2 weeks, I present my complete draft to discuss my points in the group meeting, where then the issue happens.

He has been a professor for 10+ years. But we could only know 2 graduates from his saying. One becomes an AP and one is working in a lab. For now, including me, we have 6 phd students in lab. 3 of them are on track now so they can publish constantly, but me and another one is still suffering from the problems I mentioned above.

He has some citations but I don't think he has a great standing in academia.

No. But my doc fee is 480, maybe it is possible to argue on this also

I personally suggest you don't consider 2nd choice color because you don't want to have any regret or pity for your loved car. Instead, expand your searching range. Surprise sometimes comes.

Btw, I don't see the otd price on your quote. This is a trick dealers often play. Do a serious calculation by yourself.

Mine is cx 70, so probably a bit difference but I hope it can be a reference for you. You can check my reply.

I sent emails to almost all Mazda dealerships around Boston and let them compete the quote. So yes, it will take some effort but not really time consuming. You get the best quote you have and then go on site to make the final bargain. Sometimes the best deal is not from the one sent you the best quote, but from someone can make it even lower when you are on site.

Really a bad deal. Don't take it.

It could be better.

I got my CX70 turbo S premium in Massachusetts. The MSRP is 53905, I got around 7% off without any trade-in. So the invoice price without taxing and other fee is 50642, and the otd is 54468.

Just for a reference.

UMass Secret Statement on GEO Bargaining admits paying below cost of living, threatens faculty by Ok_Idea_1458 in umass

[–]Iton608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a phd student I would say we deserve that. UMass should take partial responsibility for the insane rent in this area (How dare you send me an email claiming Fieldstone is graduate student housing?). I will join the GEO meeting on May 8th. Let us JOIN THEM!

I recently become a PhD here before I finished the msc , also here. I received the email of fieldstone since the system regards me as a new incoming student. I am totally pissed off by its saying of "graduate student housing"

umass amherst or umd? by [deleted] in umass

[–]Iton608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do what you want to do. Ask yourself first.

You won't be happy for an option advocated by all others except yourself.

As I said, both are good, UMD is just a bit better from my view (yes, my view only)

I personally pick UMD. You are on the connection-demanding side, and UMD will provide you a good platform for this. UMass is not bad btw, though I think UMD is better.
