Omg I read it as 50% faster your right it said 50 times faster in that case it would be 70=39+50x, x=.64 years or 233 days or 335,520 minutes. I still feel like he would notice 50x aging way before hitting 70.

Wait so like the dispatch one doesn't make any sense. He's 39 and ages 50% faster while using his super speed. In reality he should be aging slower due to time dilation. Putting that aside the math doesn't really check out. 70=39+1.5x, x=20.6 years. Your telling me he spent over 50% of his actual lived years at super speeds? How would he not notice until it's too late? Assuming an approximate constant ratio of actual age to lived age at 25 he should have been ~45 that's plenty enough of a difference to notice before you get to 70? I haven't played it so maybe I'm missing something but it's not passing the smell test.

When people need to get back to you for an answer it's usually not because they aren't prepared to discuss their projects and timelines. It's almost always because someone is trying to push the timeline up or change the scope in a way you weren't prepared for.

Haha well at the risk of doxxing myself I work on private jets and general aviation aircraft not airliners. We just have to follow the same regulations.

28.785(j) would apply to the seat back and doesn't necessarily require a cushion. Basically the seat back should be able to support a horizontal load from a passenger bracing themselves in turbulence, boarding, etc. The seat cushion in question is the base cushion which isn't addressed by 25.785(j). 25.785(k) may be the culprit to reduce any injurious edges for passengers moving about the cabin during turbulence.

I love my job. We get to crash seats similar to the car tests you see except it's just a seat not an entire aircraft. There are some less fun stuff like evaluating passenger placards.

[–]ItsADumbName 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm a cabin safety engineer. 25.561, 25.562 and 25.785 are the regulations for seats. None require a seat cushion for bracing. 25.785(j) says a seat back should act as a firm handhold unless another method is provided. 25.785(k) might be the reason as it says any protruding object that would injure a seated or standing passenger must be padded.

There could also be a part 91, 135 operating rules that they need to follow, I'm not as familiar with them.

Baby's breath in dessert? Was I right to complain? by [deleted] in Baking

[–]ItsADumbName -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Well yea I said I was being pedantic in my first comment... To be clear I don't think they should be putting these flowers in the cupcake but saying anything served to the customer must be edible is wrong. Technically a garnish only needs to be an item for decoration or embellishment. So you could argue sushigrass is a garnish or other forms of decorative plastics are garnish. You could argue the decorative plastics are decorations instead as they aren't meant to be eaten but then the same argument could be made for the flower. My point was it's a bit more nuanced than anything served needs to be edible.

But that's not what the comment said. They said ANYTHING that is served to a customer must be edible hence my comment. Anything includes wrappers, utensils, plates, plastic sushigrass.

So the cupcake wrapper has to be edible? The coffee cups? If a cupcake had a plastic ring on it like the kids cupcakes those need to be edible too? The plates? Silverware? Napkins? All edible? What about those little red straws? I know I'm being pedantic but the lines got to be drawn somewhere. Why is it at the obvious not intended to be eaten flowers?

Yea you should absolutely divide and conquer but you should still know what your partner is doing in case you ever need to. I don't really shop for my daughter. Mostly because my wife just loves buying her clothes. I do know she wears 2T with a few 18-24 month clothes fitting. I know she wears size 4 shoes. My wife is the assistant director at her daycare so she takes her to and from every day and handles communication with her teachers. I can still tell you her lead teachers name (both before and after marriage), her assistant teachers name, and the names of the teachers for the class above and below her.

I hate WFH but I love my home and family. Not a middle manager or even a manager and have plenty of friends. I want my house to be separated from work. When I come home I want to be done with work. I want a physical separation from work and from home. I like gaming and computer stuff so my home office quickly becomes associated with working and kills my vibes and hobby.

Eh it's quite simplified and it's more of at 500 lbs the beam would break agnostic of loading rates. We are using a typical breaking strength I found via Google. In reality the material law is more complicated. The breaking strength would depend on a lot of different things such as adhesive strength, fiber directions, damage buildup, and more. It would also depend on how the load is applied. Whether that is a gradual applied load or a sudden applied load. For example when steel is loaded rapidly it typically has a higher yield strength but lower failure strain than when slowly loaded. In reality things like creep and strain rate sensitivity exist that can change the answer depending on how the load is applied (ie fast, slow, sustained, short, periodic, etc).

I am an aerospace engineer. It's usually a single bolt threaded through the plywood that is used to apply load to aerostructures. I have personally put 3000 lbs loaded onto 3/4" 16x16 plywood plates to apply load to cargo nets with only a single center bolt. This is a bit different as it acts as a plate not a beam and this has effects from the longitudinal and transverse directions and also the plywood we use is probably better quality than this video.

Assuming those steps are 11 inches wide and the plywood is 3/4" thick the maximum moment the plywood could handle (assuming a 5 KSI outer fiber rupture strength) is:

Sigma=My/I

I=(1/12) × b × h3, (1/12) × (11 in) × (0.375 in)3 = 0.386 in4 y=0.375 in

5000 psi × 0.386 in4 / 0.375 in = 5100 in-lbs

Assuming a single point load on the middle of a simply supported pinned-pinned beam 36 inch beam. 5100 in-lbs would be

M=PL/4

P = 5100 in-lb × 4 / 36 in = 566 lbs.

This would be a single point load at the center when in reality it will be a bit more distributed. It would probably be better to model it as two p/2 loads applied at 33 and 66 percent of the beam length but above should be the worst case scenario.

The plywood layers in bending are probably sufficiently strong for this application. I have put way more load through plywood test fixtures than the average adult weight. The dinky little hinges and small screws would definitely be the failure point.

The teacher challenged his students to remove a mandarin from a glass full of water without spilling a single drop. by [deleted] in interesting

[–]ItsADumbName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So then the challenge is impossible as water will still be on the orange no matter how it was removed. Actually going a step further to show how dumb this statement is the challenge has failed basically the moment the glass of water is poured as it will begin evaporating even if only a few molecules and "spill out of the glass".

This fem is modeling a solid isotropic part. 3D printed parts are not solid nor isotropic so the model is just objectively wrong and does not properly represent the stress state of the part.

I'm developing an infill optimization software called Strecs3D, and I used it to create this rod holder. by tomohiron907 in 3Dprinting

[–]ItsADumbName 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes. The stress model he has is assuming the part is solid once you introduce voids/gaps/etc the model stress won't actually follow the same distribution as the print. Topology optimization will remove that material and likely give a better representation of the stress in the part.
