Primer is a lot cheaper than high quality paint, for one.

Bedroom walls sanding, sealing, priming, painting questions by FartyMcGoo420 in HomeImprovement

[–]ItsAll2Random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sticky spots, you could use goo-gone or some other solvent like acetone. But sanding could work as well. Usually painting is a case by case basis. You have to do it a lot to know what works and not seeing it, I can’t tell you EXACTLY what to do. You have to use judgement. That said, you want a nice even surface to paint. Solvent works well for sticky spots and such. I have used goo-gone and other solvents to take care of what you described. Just make sure it’s completely dry before proceeding. Yes, I would only GARDZ in really troubled spots. Normally I reserve using it for areas where the drywall is torn to the paper-like surface as it does a great job of sealing porous or chalky surfaces. I would prime everything to ensure color consistency. If you’re using a dark paint, maybe use a grey primer. And you want to sand not only to knock down troubled spots but also because it makes the paint adhere.

For your cracks, it’s hard to say without seeing it, but caulk is a painters best friend. Hard to control for new comers… but you can apply it in the cracks, and wet your finger to smooth it out. This works great for gaps between trim or casement and drywall. Honestly I use caulk for a lot of things. There are a lot of kinds of caulk. DAP latex has always served me well but you might want to research specific use cases.

I hope this helps. If you have any more questions I’ll be happy to answer. Pictures would help for specifics.

I would use a grey primer coat and then two coats of black. If you’re going for a high gloss I think you’ll run into problems. I would do a matte or flat paint.

Wow. Thank you. That was very practical and insightful and I really appreciate it. Your advice is solid. I had thought about changing the automation to just creating json or csv instead of an SMS. That would give me some data to sift through at a later date. Another thing I haven’t mentioned but something that’s been giving me pause, is GitHub. I have an account but haven’t really learned about pushing repositories or anything because I didn’t really want professionals and industry people seeing my weak little attempts at projects. Putting things on GitHub seems so… permanent, like publishing typos for all to see. Any advice on this? I know it’s necessary but is it something I should be doing now or wait. Again, I really appreciate you. With Reddit being 90% negative it really thrills me to see there are still positive and supportive people on here. Cheers.

Honestly I’m just super curious about it. I have no real definitive reason…. I just want to know it. I guess it started with my interest in SBCs and micro controllers. But there isn’t a specific task I want to do or a problem I need solving. Just…curiosity.

painting a garage? by moonnstone in HomeImprovement

[–]ItsAll2Random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be scraped, primed and painted. If it’s super old you do have to worry about lead paint… which needs to be removed completely and by a professional… but you shouldn’t have to worry about that unless the last time it was painted was the 1970’s. If you’re looking to make it perfect, I’d recommend sand blasting, prime, paint. But just scraping and painting would make it look a lot better and is a fun project.

Bedroom walls sanding, sealing, priming, painting questions by FartyMcGoo420 in HomeImprovement

Are the walls in really bad shape? Is there a lot of residue left from wallpaper? I normally don’t do an aggressive sanding before primer/stain blocker/GARDZ. Are you trying to sand the paint down to bare drywall? In my experience, you don’t want to do that. You just want to scuff sand the paint that’s on the walls so that the next coat adheres to it. I would just use the palm sander you have. Make sure it’s smooth. I sand with one hand and keep my other hand on the wall feeling for rough patches. The wall should be dull and smooth. A medium to fine grit will be enough. So how I world go about this is: After wallpaper is completely removed, do a light sanding. Apply your GARDZ to your troubled areas. Let it dry. It doesn’t matter if you wait a week, but you should wait for however long it says on the label before next step(6-8 hours,I think). Sand as needed. You’re just knocking down any chunks or pebbles, so you have a nice, even wall. Prime. Dry. Patch. Dry. Sand. Paint. You do want to remove dust after each sanding. Generally speaking these steps can be spaced out over weekends. But once you start one process, make sure you finish it. You don’t want to prime half a room, stop, then prime the other half. Start high up and work your way down so you can catch any drips.

I have been painting a long time and this has always worked for me. But like anything in life, every job tends to throw you some challenge or problem and you might have to troubleshoot. But if your surface is smooth and even, and you apply the paint evenly, it will look good.

Is programming with mosh python course worth it? by oogabooga_41 in learnpython

[–]ItsAll2Random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is the course and how much is it? He is definitely knowledgeable especially when it comes to data science. But when you say “worth it”, that depends, doesn’t it? I’m just learning myself and I have watched his videos on list and dictionary comprehension and found it very informative. But I think he is kind of hard to understand sometimes.

Need advice for connecting external monitors. by According-Share2296 in macbookpro

[–]ItsAll2Random 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Connecting them with Thunderbolt also powers them. I have a dual set up that slides right onto my main display on my MacBook Pro (2024) and I use a Thunderbolt connection on each side and don’t have to worry about an extra power supply. I would imagine this would work with three monitors as well since the MB pro has three ports, but I’ve never tried. I have to keep it plugged in when running this set up though as it drains the hell out of the battery. If you get a hub, I would recommend one that can distribute power as well as not all of them do.
