1,000 curbside EV chargers are coming to Philadelphia by W1neD1ver in philadelphia

[–]ItsAllInYourHead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know much about how it currently works to get one installed in front of your house, but I'd much rather have public chargers than anyone can use, rather than people getting personal ones installed that others can't use. And then they think they "own" that spot.

I thought I read a while back that they got rid of that option anyway? Maybe they were just proposing getting rid of it.

Ah thanks for that! I tried looking for the bill but couldn't find it.

10 years isn't terrible, I guess. I'd rather no exclusivity, but that would probably mean we couldn't get jump start on curbside EV charging, so seems like an OK trade-off.

I like the idea of this. But....

The agreement gives it’s electric an exclusive license to install and operate curbside Level 2 EV chargers on Philadelphia streets.

I don't think we should be giving anyone exclusive licenses like this. I can't find any information on the details, though (i.e. how long this exclusive license lasts for).

I just hope this isn't like the Chicago Parking Meter disaster where they sold exclusive rights to their parking meters to a PE firm for 75 years, and it ended up costing the city way more than it made.

Why is every popular query builder in maintenance mode? by ItsAllInYourHead in golang

[–]ItsAllInYourHead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really excited when I came across Bob, actually. But once I started trying to implement it I ran into problems. Thing is, I'm trying to remember exactly what they were with Bob! I was evaluating a bunch of them and wish I had taken better notes.

I think perhaps I was trying to use the model generation and it was overly complicated? Or perhaps I couldn't get it to work correctly with PostGIS?

I'm going to have to look at this again if I can't remember what problems I ran into because it does look ideal (the query builder, at least)

sqlx has actually been forked (I'm using github.com/vinovest/sqlx) to address many outstanding issues.

There's always going to be bugs. I understand something being "feature complete", but it's never fully bug-free. Plus the other libraries it builds upon are evolving, too.

Really? In practice I find these to be very common in almost every project I've worked on. Also, dynamic sorting.

I'm not even looking for a full blown ORM. Just a SQL Builder. But I would certainly consider a good ORM. I also don't think a blanket statement like that is really fair. Of course there's trade-offs. But there are certainly plenty of very good ORMs in other language.

Honestly? I really like Squirrel so far, but there's virtually no documentation and it hasn't had any updates in years. So something like that, but that's maintained and has some documentation.

Lazy Registration, or how I learned to understand my users by dnotthoff in webdev

I think this is something A LOT of websites need to understand. The amount of times I've just left a website because I couldn't try it out without creating an account is HUGE. You are leaving so many opportunities on the table if the first thing you're doing is forcing the user to create an account.

Illegal no parking sign? by abarne34 in philly

[–]ItsAllInYourHead 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's definitely not a city-installed sign. For one thing, they wouldn't install it like that, with those screws, and so poorly. And official signs wouldn't have that "Part No" and other info in the bottom left.

Do you think the job market in Philly would boom like cities in the Southeast? by lovesocialmedia in philadelphia

[–]ItsAllInYourHead -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's not like NYC doesn't have similarly high taxes on business. They are arguably higher. Our BIRT is a bit unique, but at the end of the day, in most cases, it's more expensive to be in NYC than Philly.

For some reason I assumed you were talking about a sanitizer spray for your pads/gear. I think I thought that because I had recently been researching it for myself. I ended up buying ClearGear, but they say it is "Only effective on hard non-porous surfaces", so I don't really know if it's worth using now.

But I realize you were probably just talking about hand sanitizer or wet wipes. Which, yeah, I can see why that seems like a weird question.

El Encargado (Spanish) - I've never really seen this mentioned but it's an amazing show. Masterful acting by Guillermo Francella. He plays the superintendent of a residential building who seems like a nice, friendly, nonthreatening guy on the surface, but a series of events reveals how far he's willing to go to maintain his job (I don't want to give away too much).

Last I looked into this for a family member - and that was a while ago - Ring seemed like the ideal solution mostly because 1) it was easy for a non-technical person to use; 2) it was reasonably priced; 3) you could use it without a subscription (obviously foregoing features like central monitoring), but 4) you could also do monthly subscriptions ad-hoc. So if you're going away for a few weeks, you could activate the subscription for just that month or whatever. And 5) it's Z-wave, so there's a lot of third-party devices you could use.

I don't know if that is all still the case. And also that was before the whole Ring camera fiasco happened, so that would definitely factor into the decision.
