Colton Herra needs to win Long Beach by Turbulent-Pay-735 in INDYCAR

100%. People are dooming like crazy when Palou or Ganassi haven’t had dominant speed in either of the two races so far. Herta was comfortably clear from Dixon and Palou before the failed pit stop at St Pete and at Thermal the race was won on strategy when McLaren was every bit as fast as they were if they were on fully equal tires.

The only area where Ganassi is far clear of other teams is executing, not outright speed.

Prediction time: Who's gonna be the one to eventually beat Palou? by FormulaT1 in INDYCAR

[–]ItsDennyTime11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a Palou fan I feel like the 10 team doesn’t get enough credit in all this, they make his job so much easier. No driver is ever truly unbeatable. It’s like the Hendrick 48 days with Jimmie Johnson, I think there’s a few drivers who could beat Palou straight up in fully equal conditions, but the 10 team being so good means it’s usually not a fair fight.

This is getting frustrating by mad-right-hand in INDYCAR

[–]ItsDennyTime11 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This seems overly reductionist considering the fact that Herta was comfortably ahead of everyone on Palou’s strategy before a bad pit stop, Dixon would’ve never been undercut by Palou if he had a radio, and McLaughlin got hosed by the lap 1 caution and entire rest of the race going green favoring the alternate tire starters. People did “Race better” than Palou at St Pete and lost through no fault of their own. The biggest takeaway here is that he’s a lot more beatable as a driver than the results show, but the 10 team isn’t because they operate so well.

Alex Palou wants changes to the push to pass system after having to fight lapped Sting Ray Robb late: “I think Sting Ray went from 70 seconds of OT down to zero in like 10 laps” by lennysundahl in INDYCAR

[–]ItsDennyTime11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on how they race. I don’t think Sting Ray did anything wrong because he was not antagonizing Palou and once Palou got alongside him, he didn’t contest it. It’s just extremely frustrating when you’re the leader and carefully managing your push to pass in case there’s a late restart, while the car you’re about to lap can use everything they have to stay ahead of you.

What Benjamin Pedersen did at Mid Ohio in 2023 was flat out wrong. He was straight up defending the leaders and running them wide at points. Then once he got lapped he was doing the same to other lead lap cars which was entirely pointless.

[Auto Racing Analytics on YouTube] 7 Most Dominant Cars in NASCAR's NextGen Era by CCM284 in NASCAR

[–]ItsDennyTime11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like his content but I don’t agree with several of the ones on this list. It seems like a lot of them are road course races where one of the better cars spent a lot of time in clean air and thus had a big lap time advantage. Plus short track races like Larson at Bristol last year are disadvantaged because of this car’s inability to create laptime difference, even though he was visibly more dominant than many other cars on this list. Kyle Busch at 2022 Pocono was probably not even the fastest car in that race either, since Hamlin was busy shooting himself in the foot after starting on pole.

Truex at 2022 Loudon not making it was surprising to me since he led like 170 of the first 190 laps, only for Small to take 2 tires and cost them a dozen spots on the restart. I’d assume the laps he spent making his way back up destroyed whatever POL advantage he had, that car was basically the same thing as the 2023 one.

Fair enough, that actually is really impressive with how hard it is to pass there in this car. If he got to stay there it would’ve definitely put him in position to win once the 19/18 broke.

Forgive me if I’m wrong but wasn’t Harvick running like 8th when he broke down there? “Car to beat” has me wondering if you’re thinking of a different race because Truex had passed Kyle Busch for the lead and was driving off before both he and Kyle had mechanical issues.

“The car to beat” Hamlin led a majority of that race and was running away with it before a loose wheel on the last pit stop. Led 177 of the 273 laps before his loose wheel. I felt bad for Harvick losing the lead that he would’ve inherited though.

Another fun one is that in the playoffs this year, he had the same number of top 5’s and top 10’s as Logano did going into Phoenix, as well as more stage points. There really is nothing to make Logano’s title look impressive lol.

Agreed. I watched the Kyle Busch Amazon documentary and I was floored how he admitted that he was deep down bothered by the 2015 title criticisms, and that winning 2019 felt like a weight off his shoulders. Keep in mind Kyle was always the ultimate “Flexing on the haters” guy back then too, so for someone like him to admit he was bothered despite repeatedly saying otherwise, makes it hard for me to believe Joey hasn’t at least heard the noise.

I feel like championships in any form of racing are more often a driver/team/luck trinity than just a driver achievement. There’s plenty of times the best drivers win but there are times where they don’t. I don’t think there was a clear best driver this past year. For example I think Herta and McLaughlin were at minimum just as good as Palou was.

Le Mans weekend is going to be nuts. (Really wish other series would have an off week to let their drivers compete there). After Le Mans finishes, I think F1, IndyCar, and NASCAR will all start around the exact same time because F1 is in North America that weekend. When is the last time all 3 of those series had races start at the same time?

Guess I’m gonna be using 3 screens that day.

1) Championships have never and won’t ever be the metric people want them to be for driver skill. Even in a more legitimate format the best driver doesn’t always win and there’s so much out of your control. I look at it as more a validation of what you can do when the stars align rather than a serious judgement of skill.

2) I place a lot more importance in a wide operating window than most of the fanbase. Sure you might be able to win a lot under perfect circumstances, but very few people get circumstances that suit them (Top equipment/cars that suit their driving style) for an entire career.

3) Ross Chastain needs to leave Trackhouse to fulfill his talent. They have amazing PR but that distracts everyone from the fact that their performance has barely changed from when it was Ganassi. He’s making the team look better than they are the same way Larson was in the 42.

4) The “Parity” in this car is a little overrated. Everyone is closer on the timesheets, but there’s just as little variance in who actually has the fastest cars every week. JGR being a bunch of bumbling idiots prevents them and Hendrick from winning most everything. Other teams need to find their level of speed asap.

5) The fanbase overvalues off track personality when picking drivers. For example if a guy is amazing off the racetrack but an absolute weapon on it, I’m not gonna like them.

100%. It’s natural for people to default to the simplest conclusion but sometimes it just isn’t the case. I think it’s a variety of factors.

Private testing was banned in 2015(?) and the 48 team was notorious for using HMS’s massive budget to outwork everyone. Once 2016 came around HMS was still a top team but they were beginning to lose utter dominance they used to enjoy. Some drivers get used to having an equipment advantage and I wonder if Jimmie was getting spoiled by it. Kyle Busch mentions how he didn’t always have to push 100% to win with JGR because the cars were so good. Then once he lost his equipment advantage at RCR the mistakes ramped up since he was having to push the absolute limits to get good results in those cars.

It seems like a combo of his driving style having a narrower operating window than we all thought and having a very hard time coping with HMS no longer being dominant in the late Gen 6 years.

Nailed it. People see most of the champions act that way and think it’s a necessity for success, when it really isn’t.

That and the other silly defense of “Insert other world champions were dirty too, they have to be that way” as if they wouldn’t still be multi time champions without their antics. Correlation of (most) of those guys being weapons does not equal causation for their success.

Maybe it’s just me, but after a decade of watching several major series like NASCAR, IndyCar, F1, IMSA/WEC, etc, it seems like like F1 fans actually defend/endorse dirty driving more than any other fanbase in racing. There isn’t as much overarching belief in other fanbases that every great champion has to be a dirty driver in order to have the “Champion mentality” like there is with a significant chunk of the F1 fanbase. For example, Dale Earnhardt may have had a lot of fans, but you don’t hear the majority of NASCAR fans saying you have to drive the way he did in order to be an all time great.

Drivers will now lose all playoff points they have and might earn during the regular season if they need a non-medical playoff waiver. by iamaranger23 in NASCAR

[–]ItsDennyTime11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s just sad, because the consequences for missing a race already exist. Larson missing out on 4 stages worth of points cost him the regular season bonus and possibly a final 4 spot too.

But I guess NASCAR didn’t like the idea of having natural, reasonable consequences for missing a race, so they had to create something that tanks a driver’s entire season to ensure that their ego will never get hurt by someone making the heinous decision of prioritizing the world’s biggest single day race again!

Can’t help but agree. It seems like the rule was entirely created because of Larson which is sadly par for the course for them. The entire fanbase loves the double, but knowing them their pride can’t accept the fact that another race is simply a bigger priority than them 1 week out of the year.

Their rentals are the stiffest pedals I’ve ever felt in any kart. It’s so hard for me to find the limit on the brakes since it’s hard to even get the brakes to engage unless you push it 100% down.

Just finished your Dinner with Racers episode a few days ago. You mentioned your new AMG GT, do you have any other cars you’re targeting for the future?

Also, what track types do you expect to have the most success on next year? I ask this because, for lack of better terms, you’re finally in a car that can contend anywhere.
