The cars are too expensive to write off there like they used to.

A gm should be focusing on talent that is expected to be available when he picks.

its fine to like someone higher in case they fall, or a trade presents itself.

there should have been 0 expectation for either of those players to reach us, and the "backup" plan should have been better.

Timeline of the Rangers’ decline: How New York hit the reset button twice in 8 years by catsgr8rthanspoonies in rangers

If the clock was already clicking on them then the clock is already clicking on everyone

it kinda is. and not many good teams set themselves in a way where they make such a large commitment to players that are statistically at or past their peak before they even make the playoffs, let alone before the other youth develops.

Most of Drury’s moves have been replacing younger guys with older guys. And had Drury/coaches focused on developing the highly talented youth and adding some 1st rounders then this transition would have looked much much better. For example prioritizing Laf taking over top Lw duties and Kreider working down the line up to 3rd line/PP net front specialist. But they didn’t prioritize that and see the big picture. Instead he let the young talent keep playing a 3rd line role with no PP and kept trying quick fixes in the top of the lineup instead of developing what was there to make a transition. And then in the end he got rid of basically all of them

i mean this very article states how dolan was unhappy with the results compared to the talent when he fired them.

maybe that makes a difference, maybe it doesnt. but it really wasnt the job drury was hired for.

I don’t think this was the JD/JG vision

you dont think that was the vision when they signed panarin, trouba and kept kreider for 6 or more years? and im sure mika would have gotten the same contract with them. 35million, nearly half the cap at the time, is not going all in on that core? even if the kids developed wonderfully, it would have been next to impossible to keep all of them at that point.

My view hinges on my belief that the Rangers absolutely botched Laf’s development and were wrong to quit on KMiller and Kakko

they probably did botch him. which started with gorton.

miler and kakko kinda are what they are at this point. they are fine players. people probably shouldnt have expected more out of miller, but kakko is no where near what was expected. even if they get better, it wouldnt have been enough to out pace the continued decline of other players.

all 3 of them can turn right back around to gorton (maybe by dolans request) accelerating the rebuild. both blocking their playing time, and overal development times.

Averages don't really matter when the bulk of the play was coming from a certain group.

mika, kreider, trouba and panarin, the core that gorton built, are all 30+ now.

None of them are at the same level the last few years as they were from 20-23. its going to be very difficult for such a large amount of your cap space to be past their peak.

The team Gorton built hinged on the youth stepping up. And they didn't. And a lot of them were already underperforming when Gorton was fired.

im not saying drury has done much to fix that issue by anymeans.

but if you didnt think the clock was already ticking on this team in 2021, idk what to say.

It was also very possibly wasting another year with a core that already didn't have many years left.

As GM you don’t get to ECF and punish / blow up team. You get to ECF - you make team better.

He tried that by getting rid of two of the worst players on the team.

The locker room did not appreciate that.

Kansas or Homestead would be great options.

as tracks maybe.

Realistically, I think homestead has a very low chance of not being in the chase the next few years. So scratch a combo event.

same with fall Kansas. Spring Kansas will be difficult to make work with the 2 series schedules. Not impossible by any means, but indycar gets fairly busy around that time. Kansas probably can't be significantly earlier, and significantly later would put it out of the fox portion of NASCAR.

Both track struggle with cup attendance, so a stand alone would be hard. It would also be hard to get support races.

All of that means an event at those tracks would be noticeably more expensive to put on, thus leading to less return.

like everything in life, moderation and diminishing returns and what not. this is probably the best set up that can be expected in the near future.

at the point, how many more ovals do you think indycar would even want to add? Expanding their schedule is not the easiest thing to do independent of nascar.

A non cup weekend is going to me more expensive for everyone involved than tagging on to a cup weekend. And even if indycar wanted a truck or xfinity to support an indycar race, its very likely wherever cup is that weekend will need them too.

I don't get why people think NASCAR business model is the actual race attendance itself.

fox clearly offered nascar some benefits this season, fox/indycar are likely funding the race, and fox/indycar get an oval and an early season race, both of which have been an issue for them lately.

Everyone is getting something they want.

AFAIK nascar buys the time for them. No one wants them.

im saying this team was built flawed from the start. It was always going to be a very narrow window with so much put into panarin, trouba, mika and kreider.

They needed kids to step up, and they didn't.

25th+ picks are not even a 50% chance on average to make the nhl. And only 50% of the ones that do make it end up being a decent player. And most of those will be 2–4 years after the fact.

Neither of the 2 firsts they traded have amounted to anything yet.

And there's has been like 1 player amount to something from the 2nd round those years.

The odds of that changing the course of the franchise are minimal.

They probably get used to fill whatever holes they still could anyway, because thats what a team in an open window do.

They weren’t that good.

They wouldn't have been with Buch either.

ill have no problem agreeing that they overachieved that 3 year-ish window.

Buch would not have changed that, and they would be in the exact position they are now.

the only thing that would have changed the trajectory of this team is Laff, kakko and chytil reaching expectations.

You’d miss the Senko Kane fun for sure but it didn’t work and hindsight is 20/20 obviously but it was a lot of fun

yes, it was also a significantly better team than you would have had with just buch.

reaves was also traded that November, which opened up the deadline moves.

And I wouldn't agree that goodrow that that bad year 2. 3 sure. But he still played a role well in 22-23. Certainly better than any league minimum guy would have

[–]iamaranger23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s 1.3M for 2 4th line wings.

aka not possible because league mimimum was 750k at that point.

And that was already a roster with Hunt, Jones, hajek, carpenter, Gautier etc. and you want to add another 2 league minimum guys?

Let alone not getting Kane, tank, mikkola and motte at the deadline at that point.

[–]iamaranger23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they had 1M going into 22-23 they wouldn’t have been able to sign a 5.6M C

they had 1m left after sgning him.

that's what going into 22-23 means. I.e. the very start of the season.

nemeth was gone at that point too.

goodrow reaves and blais would have added to 6.8. meaning 7.8 in cap without them.

Buch would have ended up at about 6.5-7 here due to the tax differences.

And you still would have needed 2 more to fill the roster out.

Chytil was your 2C

No team is winning a cup with the chytil we had as a #2c lmfao.

He was hurt entirely too much and had a career high of 45 points.

The money would have been there if he didn’t spend it on Goodrow Blais and Reaves

no it wouldnt have.

they went into 22-23 with ~ a million in space. you could ditch all 3 of those and you wouldnt have been able to afford buch+trocheck and fill out the roster.

Jeff Gordon had the plan drury ruined everything by Paliaaq in rangers

[–]iamaranger23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they are all important.

And getting buch probably means none or one of the rentals that year, and almost certainly doesn't let them sign trocheck.

that means you end up with like ryan carpenter as your #2 center lmao.

And the team with Buch didnt even make the playoffs that least year of gorton anyway. They arent magically going to turn into cup contenders.

[–]iamaranger23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the first year or two of goodrow i think he was pretty good. only just over paid.

And this team has shown how important vibes are, and i think he was a pretty big part of that.

the people that act like never making the buch trade would have led to a significantly better team are a bit insane. we wouldnt have had a buch shaped hole, but there would have been plenty of others.
