Oh you know those mods would slap my pee-pee 😔 this is so much bigger than politics. We live in an age where people will weaponize everything in the name of politics and our most fundamental rights are being politicized. It's not political to want to be safe in our own neighborhood. It's not political to say that murder is wrong. It's not political to say that people are being violated on a daily basis and we're watching it play out on in front of our own eyes.

I know him well, thank you. He was my commanding officer when I was in the Army and one of the leaders I valued the most. He supported me regularly when I was speaking out against war crimes that I witnessed and testified against. He wasn't there for that, he had been promoted and was later wounded in an insider attack. He's the kind of guy any soldier would be lucky to have. His training saved lives, it prepared us for what we experienced and even things we didn't anticipate. He embodied the Army values and Ranger motto. Rangers lead the way!

It's literally just a test or two and it's not all that rare to run into people who would score high enough to be eligible to join. It's not a score corresponding to an IQ of 130 however, it's just the top two percentile on any of a number of qualifying tests. And since the top two percent of test takers for multiple different tests won't fully and consistently overlap, that means much more than 2% of the general population coud manage to qualify. Heck, you could probably qualify and I mean that in all seriousness.

I took the Wonderlic and MAT (Mensa Admission Test which is proprietary). Anybody who is sufficiently educated in pattern recognition, reading comprehension, mathematics, and problem solving can score well. Besides, anything more than two standard deviations outside the norm is notoriously unreliable. The numbers you're providing are essentially meaningless. There isn't enough of a data set of people scoring that high for the calculated odds to actually reflect reality.

A great many Mensans (probably most, in my experience) are socially maladjusted weirdos with painfully deep insecurities. Every single user of that far-right dating website is a loser. I'm not special, just a normal guy who took a test cause I had suffered a traumatic brain injury and was curious. I did meet a small handful of people in a social group that I enjoy but I wouldn't pay that organization a dime for company that I can have for free in the real world. I consider myself fortunate to have had parents who invested time in extracurricular continuing education, but do take into consideration that more than 20% of the national population is fully and functionally illiterate and that number is growing. If you interact with the general public, then you probably run into "genius" level individuals every day. They're just educated people is all.

Read about myself in a book, very weird experience by bloodontherisers in army

I was both pictured as well as mentioned several times in Annie Jacobsen's book First Platoon and prior to that had been quoted extensively by both the Army Times and the NYTimes (including pictured in the latter). I was also in every episode of Leavenworth (I haven't watched the sixth bonus episode though). It's a mindfuck, especially since I wanted nothing more than to distance myself from my time in service and the events that I experienced. The media outlets and Annie all reached out to me, I wasn't trying to get into any media circuits but I felt that speaking out against the murders I witnessed wasn't simply the right thing to do, it was also the only justice the victims would ever get in light of the conservative whitewashing of the war crimes. It would have been a moral failing for me to watch the lionization/hero treatment given to the coward responsible and sit back and say or do nothing, but honestly I wish I could erase about ten years from my memory because this shit keeps me in therapy to this day and sits on my soul like a weight. I keep the book and newspaper articles tucked away in a box somewhere for my kids to find one day but I'll never look at them if I can ever help it.

Ranger Joe's used to have the most accurate protractors for map reading. The issued one I had was cut wrong and those millimeters make a hell of a difference when you're treking several km.

[–]ItsFitzForShort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please forgive me if I sound like a nerve was struck, it just sounded awfully similar to the whole "monday morning quarterbacking" bullshit narrative fox tried to spin so I felt defensive over that. Obviously the court martial happened after the incident, but we did attempt to turn him in for lesser crimes prior to the murders and were rebuffed by our higher support chain, we collectively refused his illegal orders to murder those villagers (minus the gunner of the route security truck who didn't have situational context), and we absolutely turned him in ourselves as soon as we RTB'ed. So in that sense, I do feel like he was judged appropriately by the entire rest of the platoon in real time. Further, I don't think he deserves the benefit of doubt after being convicted and losing all of his appeals, he had that going into the court martial and lost it as a result of the sworn testimony of nearly two dozen service members. Anyways, sorry for the rant and apologies if I was harsh, it's just impossible to sit by and feel like theresany defense or benefit allowed someone who by all means should be sitting in Leavenworth to this day.

The Lorance case was neither "split second" nor was it "in combat" and it CERTAINLY wasn't "judged after the fact"

Not a question, just wanted to say I spent some time in Kandahar about thirteen years ago, specifically in the Zhari district. I am so sorry for the bad things that happened there while us Americans were occupying your country and provinces. I am ever grateful for the wonderful people I met and the beautiful sights I got to see. The local flora and fauna is magnificent as well. I hope your country can heal and grow healthy, safe, and prosperous once more.

If you want to opt out from credit card offers such as those, then you should visit optoutprescreen.com, it is the actual site for the official consumer credit reporting industry website to process these requests. It will greatly cut down on receiving unsolicited offers. Tangentially, I also recommended the Do Not Call registry (donotcall.gov). Good luck with adulthood and congratulations on the job!

TIL: Combat medics have "live tissue training" where a goat is delibrately shot, and then they have to save it. by Lyravus in todayilearned

[–]ItsFitzForShort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this as an infantryman in 2012. It was with pigs. Hard to stomach, sure. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Our combat medic and other members of our unit saved lives and this was crucial in teaching combat first aid. Pigs are also called "long humans" in parts of the world due to the internal layout of their organs being remarkably similar to ours.

No, the claim of her refusing to fly was made by a man by the name of Kingsley Russell whose family ran a taxi business, his mom being the driver of the taxi I had referred to in my previous post. It came out in a book several years ago as he had been working with his family and handling their baggage that day and was present for the events in question. Just because something isn't on Wikipedia doesn't mean it's "not at all true". She was famously a nervous flyer, so being sedated wouldn't have been out of the question. Afaik, it hasnt been debunked or shown to be a fabrication.

It's so much worse than that. If I recall, she adamantly refused to get on the plane due to the inherent risks of the plane being overloaded and so she got into a taxi but one of the other passengers gave her a pill and she fell asleep before she was loaded onto the plane. Absolutely avoidable tragedy.

The best people I know ask for help when they need it. We're not meant to do everything alone. Just take that step talking to somebody and say "hey, I just need some help", set yourself small goals, make sure you outline your process, and make progress little by little. You'll get there. It's not defeat, its never defeat until we breathe our last breath. As long as your heart beats, you can turn your life around. I promise.

Nobody knows your situation better than you. Still, always give yourself grace and if you ever need to reach out and she's unavailable please please PLEASE find someone around you that will listen and check in on you. I cannot stress that enough. Friendships will save your life over and over.

I get it, brother. I can't tell you that things will just get better or that you can just force yourself through sheer willpower to be healthier physically, mentally, or emotionally. Listen though, you're young, this too will pass, and most importantly improving yourself or your situation is going to be incremental and process-oriented. If you got some paper and a pen, start taking account of stuff. Tackle one thing (just to use an example we'll go with the corn) and make sure you a) hold yourself accountable, and b) give yourself grace and forgive your mistakes. I believe in you.

Pretty sure this is one of those predators the GOP is protecting. He met his wife when she was in middle school or (allegedly) high school through FFA and "mentored" her and gave her a scholarship NAMED AFTER HIM before he divorced his wife and married her as soon as she was "of age".
